Super Mundane Car Insurance Inquiry
« on: March 23, 2016, 12:45:50 PM »
Greetings Board,

We are tackling our bills that we think are too high. First up is our Car Insurance bill. We are currently paying approx. $103/month thru AmFam which is decidedly exorbitant. I did the attached quote through the Progressive site, which offers a quote of $60/month, and was wondering if anyone thought we could do better/ make any essential changes to further lower the bill. Our car is a 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring which we still owe approx. $2000 on (although, not for long.) Thanks!

Edit to add: the Progressive quote is almost identical coverage to the AmFam coverage.

Will you be paying in full, bringing down the price to about $46 / month?

Personally I usually get better rates from AllState and State Farm, but that may be conditional / regional. Still, it doesn't hurt to get quotes from them (with the same coverage.)

I pay $45/month on a 2010 Honda Fit. It's parked outside. I found working through an insurance broker, who for some reason worked with a bank, to be helpful in reducing my insurance bill - I was paying crazy rates due to a home claim a few years back.

Yes, now that you mention it, I probably will.

To be honest, a lot of the online quotes from other agencies require a phone number, and I am loath to open myself up to that. I don't want to talk to anybody or be inundated by sales calls. I feel like the $46 is pretty decent, but I have reservations about adequate coverage. I've currently never been in an accident (and don't intend to be involved in one lol), but so many of the 'recommended' numbers seem insanely high. $100K for liability on property damage, for instance? In a car accident? I don't get why coverage would need to be so high.

You could reduce the cost further by raising your collision/comprehensive deductibles.
