Talkatone ending google voice support in May...what to do?
« on: January 14, 2014, 02:06:41 PM »
Hello!  I had been happily using talkatone for Google Voice on my cellular enabled iPad mini ($20/month to verizon)+ Airvoice $10/month plan on my old unlocked iPhone.  My iPhone bit it, so I ported my number to Google Voice, cxld Airvoice and now just have the iPad mini phone.
However, google voice is not allowing talkatone to use it anymore starting in May and I am wondering what to do once talkatone is not an option.  The Apple ap store reviews for the Google Hangouts app are terrible, do any mustachians have experience with it?

Also, is there any way to send & receive SMS to/from multiple recipients using google voice?  My husband texted my dog walker & me and I only see his texts, and don't get any of hers.

Thanks!

If you want to keep using Google Voice on your iPad, you'll need to use Google Hangouts. Full stop. You get what you pay for, consider switching over to a per minute VoIP solution like VOIP.ms and a softphone like 3CX or Acrobits to use with it if you can't justify a full-on VOIPo type plan.

As to your latter question, your problem is with your dog walker, she's only responding to your husband. Beyond that:

Do you have to port your number to those services?  Or do you just forward your Google Voice number to them?

Either or. I'm unsure if porting will allow you to do SMS support with VOIP.ms, though, as SMS gateway support is limited to certain numbers/exchanges with them.

I have an iPhone 4 and have been using Google Hangouts for almost 3 months now.  The audio quality is fine, placing calls is fine.

My only complaint is that when someone calls me, the app takes so long to open up that I can't answer it before the calls go to voice mail.  I'm not sure if that problem would be solved if I had a newer iPhone, but frankly I don't really care.  There are only three people that call me on it (everyone else is on an iPhone and uses FaceTime Audio) and those three people know that if I don't answer, odds are I'll be calling them back within 30 seconds.  For me, it's not a big deal and it helped me to cut my cell phone bill down to $8 a month.  With that kind of savings, I can put up with a bit of inconvenience.
