Best websites to buy engagement ring?
« on: December 06, 2015, 10:51:14 AM »
This is not for me, I am helping my sister's boyfriend. He is not going super-mustacian and shopping pawn shops, CL, etc.

What websites are known for good prices?

It will be all emerald, no diamonds, so something semi-custom may be required as most emerald rings seem to have diamonds.

I had an excellent experience with whiteflash.com 2 years ago. Good proce, good service and appraised at higher clarity than i paid for.

Check out pricescope for all the information you'll need and ~5% discount.

I was happy with Union Diamond, as were my friends. But this was a long time ago - 2007. Make sure you get a GIA stone and it helps to see the GIA reports online so you can find stones with inclusions off the table of the diamond. It's not a bad idea to get an appraisal after you get the stone to make sure the stone matches the certificate.

If you're not into blood diamonds,  this is where I got mine (7-stone eternity band for about $800).

Moissanite is way cheaper, just as hard, but it looks like a perfect diamond so it's only issue is it's a little extra sparkly.

Very happy with my purchase!   (though actually likely got one a little too many CT- wish I had stayed smaller)

I bought my fiances ring on Adiamor. I had been searching blue nile non stop as I had heard great things, then I found basically an identical ring that I even liked slightly more, for about 20-30% less. Mind you this is with same grade certified diamonds and everything.

I am very happy with my purchase.

I used Blue Nile, but it was a decade ago, so IDK if they're still great. I did think they were a great value though.

Earlier I had a message about rings but it was about diamonds. Scratch that.

Ok, emeralds. I recently become a big fan of emeralds and I will say that if
I wanted an emerald, I definitely would want to choose it myself. Natural emeralds are full of inclusions. I find them mysterious, they remind me of being plunged deep into a green sea.

I would want to see them under a loupe and in person.

In other words, I would want to choose my inclusions. Emeralds have so much personality in their unique markings, I'd want to know that personality before buying.

Thanks guys.

The only place we had been able to find emerald solitaire rings was Gemvara, so it's nice to see that recommended.

I will work my way through the other suggestions, but none of them appear to have emerald-only rings as an option through the standard website, so we'll have to contact me each about whether they can do it custom.

Another vote for blue nile, that is where DH got mine.  And I would not recommend an emerald for a daily wear ring, they are too fragile.

For anyone else reading this, I went to a local jeweler and mentioned that I had been browsing on Blue Nile. Before you knew it the owner pulled out his laptop and was browsing diamonds with me and showing me near identical diamonds that he could sell me for cheaper.

Yes, I know Blue Nile is essentially a way for jewelers to sell diamonds online, but support local business by giving your local jewelers a chance so they can sell to you direct.

Yep.  I went to a big box store, find the ring I wanted and had them quote me.

Found an even better ring with a 3 chain, family owned local.  Knew the moment she told me the price I was going with it.  Hassled with the sales person over a few bucks, in the mean time, she kept giving us free drinks.

So I saved thousands and I got a nice buzz.  Love the customer service annually as well.  They went above and beyound.

I haven't officially bought mine yet (going to Saturday), but the service they provide is unparalleled. Free cleaning, 100% trade in value no-strings attached (if I ever wanted to upgrade), free repair, the works, all free.

Check out the simulated emeralds.  We bought the CZ stones for my ring from them.  Had no problem, and they were exactly as described.  Here's my post about what we ended up doing:  http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/share-your-badassity/hacked-my-engagement-ring/msg605838/#msg605838

I'm glad to hear the love for family owned local, stores.

It's important that OP understand that a jeweler will bring in stones for you to look at, assuming you are a serious buyer who will work with him.  Your choices are not limited to his current inventory. And the setting you want is simple, so that's not an issue.

I beg you not to go with simulated emerald, they are not interesting.

Signed
Iris, lover of emeralds ( I don't have one mind you)
