Seeking a leak proof water bottle
« on: August 07, 2017, 05:32:26 AM »
I am looking for a solid, leak proof water bottle for my son's lunch box. The ones we currently have are quite large and will not fit. The ones I seem to be finding are the classic bike-type water bottle with the squirt top, or have a flip top lid. I'm afraid these will leak all over the place after being flopped around by a kindergartner.  Suggestions?

Contigo.

Rubber maid "juice boxes" with the flip up straw.   You will lose the internal straw frequently, but it never leaked.  Can replace the internal straw with one from mcDonalds (cut shorter), as needed.

Screw tops -- i was always getting a bottle but no cap coming home.  DS would fiddle and tear off the rubber connector, then lose the cap.

How old is your son? Might make for better suggestions.
But I'll second that the contigo 2 pack from Costco is a great deal and my son throws them everywhere and they almost never leak. We also have a kids size camelbak straw cup that does well but the bite portion can get misaligned and that will make it leak. So if your son is old enough to not pull on that I would suggest that one. We also tried a fifty/fifty (hydroflask knock off from target) that I love, but the straw portion does leak if the forget to shut it before putting it away.

My son is 5. I am also concerned that a screw top lid may not make it back home. I will check out Contigo, although we are not Costco members (nearest one is 45 minutes away).

Another recommendation for small Nalgene screw top (got ours at REI). They don't leak and last forever.

Buy one of the smaller Hydro Flask metal bottles (in green if you're cool like me! ;-). With the screw on lid, they are very watertight (if you buy the nipple attachment, they leak). They are of excellent quality and should last for many years--well worth the money. Water condensation on the outside and rings on furniture also are eliminated by the double-layer design. Also, they have very effective insulation and keep my ice cubes intact for the entire day at work (I refill with glorious free refrigerated bottled water throughout the day).

My kids have these ones.

Love them because they are easy to clean and I don't trust straw cups (I think they are unsanitary). They have been in the dishwasher many times and the decorations have not faded. I have not had the boys bring them to school, but they have not leaked for hiking and whatnot. I have 2 boys very close in age to yours.

And the kids don't have to unscrew anything! Aside from the lose-the-top issue, IME kids that age cannot screw anything tightly enough to not leak. Seriously, just buy this one and stop looking :-).

Thanks, all! I actually ended up ordering Contigo Autoseal Trekker bottles from Amazon (before I saw your recommendation, FP) They got great reviews, so I'm hopeful!

Those look great, too! I love AutoSeal. I have a coffee mug with it, too.

Rubbermaid straw bottles create vacuum as they are leak proof, and after a while it's really hard to suck the water out. So I slightly unscrew mine just enough to let the air in. Then I put it in my backpack forgetting to screw it back closed, and I get water all over. Probably happened at least 5 times before I learned to switch brand. Also, sometimes I would squeeze the little rectangular ones (for lunch milk) and all the milk comes out all over. Camelback with flip-rubber tip work well for all of us but I wouldn't put milk in them because I doubt it would clean easily.
