Best way to learn app programming on the side?
« on: March 03, 2014, 02:24:14 PM »
I've for a long time toyed with the idea of refreshing my wildly out-of-date programming skills (I was in the last class at school that did everything in PASCAL before they switched to C) to be able to try and build some of the iOS app ideas I've come up with over the years (I ran an iPhone App review podcast for a while and came up with a number of ideas of my own).

For anyone who's done it, what's the best (quick, effective, and inexpensive) way to learn a new programming language like the Objective C that iOS applications (and I believe Mac OS apps as well now) are written in? Thanks!

I have used CodeSchool recently to learn Ruby On Rails and a bunch of other stuff. There's probably a ton of free resources to learn on the internet but I found CodeSchool's way of doing things to be a really good way to learn and practice at the same time. They have classes on iOS here : https://www.codeschool.com/paths/ios

Here's what you do : take the free course on learning Objective-C.

If you like it and want to keep using CodeSchool, use their "hall pass" to have 2 days of free access to all the classes : https://www.codeschool.com/hall_passes/213f3fedb6b9/claim_shared?utmr=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.ca%2F

If you want to keep using CodeSchool to learn new things, wait for your hall pass to expire and in less than a week they should send you a code to register for 9$/mo. instead of 29$/mo.

Full time iOS developer here-- the best resource on lots and lots of topics to me is Ray Wenderlich's tutorials.

http://www.raywenderlich.com/tutorials

Those tutorials will get you from "I've never seen XCode before" to some pretty advanced topics, one small step at a time.

Thanks Khao & iamlindoro, both of those look like excellent things to look into!
