Best thing to do with mealy peaches?
« on: September 25, 2015, 12:41:48 AM »
I bought a basket of 12 (grown in province), and after eating four mealy peaches I'm convinced they're all like that and can't bring myself to bite into any more. Googled uses for them and peach crumble, cobbler, bread all came up as suggestions.  Any recommendations on the best thing to make them into, so you don't notice the "woolly" texture?  I hate to waste anything, despite how disappointing they are. :(

Make a sauce or butter out of them.   For sauce, peel if desired, then cut up and toss into pot with a bit of water at the bottom.  Heat on medium until cooked, then blend.

This! I had to do this to a whole case of peaches this year and it completely saved them. I think in a cobbler the texture would have still come through.

Peach jam is also very tasty, and easy to make. I've done this before, as I can't stand that mealy texture. The flavour of the jam was great, and the texture was jam-like.

briefly cook them in a skillet with a small pat of butter.  drizzle with a bit of vanilla OR your 0,5oz of your favorite alcohol (spiced rum works particularly well).  Then eat inside crepes or as a topping on waffles.

Peach jam is amazing to eat in January.  The directions are right on the pectin jar IIRC.

I dried a bunch this summer and they turned out great.

Fruit syrup is great on pancakes.  Run the fruit through the blender.  Cook down a little.  Add sugar until the level of sweetness suits you.  Add any spices you like.  Freeze in pints.  Thaw and pour on pancakes.

You could grill them--slice, brush with maple sugar, put butter on the griddle. Or put them on muffins, or in peach custard pie.

Jam, or a chutney.

Do you eat smoothies?  Cut in chunks (peel or not) and freeze for smoothies.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks back. Almost any cooking method will get rid of the mealiness. In fact, I just diced and simmered all of them and then decided what to do with them later.

Thank you all for your suggestions!  I woke up to find DH had moved the peaches into the fridge, so that bought me a day or two to decide what to do.
