Las Vegas / Henderson is quite different from Reno / Sparks, which is quite different from rural (Elko, Winnemucca, Tonopah, etc).

Where are you considering?

I need LCOL and temperate climate and can tolerate heat.

I was thinking of Reno, but concerned with all the gambling stuff.

I am considering move for health reasons.

TIA

Reno / Sparks has 4 real seasons, doesn't get ridiculously hot in summer, and generally low humidity.

Have you visited the area? The downtown casino area is crappy, but neighborhoods are pretty much like other western US midsized cities - lots of generic sprawl. Good mountain access for that sort of recreation.

As far as I'm concerned, the best spot in Reno is at the start of the Mt. Rose highway. You're close to downtown, and also close to Lake Tahoe, which, if you don't like snow, is just an amazingly beautiful place to explore in the summer months.

Another nice spot is the Gardnerville area, in the Carson Valley at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade, which brings you to South Lake Tahoe.

Carson City has cheaper gas (something to do with it being the state capital) but apart from that, I can't say I'd want to live there.

Reno area housing is kind of expensive now, both for rents and purchasing. Don't know where OP is coming from - if from SF Bay, it'll be cheap, but if from midwest, it'll be high.

Earthquakes - there are a lot of fault lines in or near Reno, but people don't seem to be that worried about it. Don't know why. Most houses are stick built, not much masonry or brick construction.

Few basements in houses, except for old areas (1940s and earlier) and sloping lots (daylight or walk out basement). Ground is full of rocks and excavation is difficult / expensive, so subdivision developers don't dig basements. Crawlspace foundation is common, some slab on grade, some post / pier.

Casino atmosphere isn't really present in neighborhoods. There are slots or video poker in supermarkets but it's not overwhelming. Mostly just a generic feel to the place.

Property taxes are low, no income tax, but sales tax was just voted for an increase in Washoe County (up to 8.75% I think) for a school funding initiative. Gasoline prices are higher than average - it comes from California refineries.

Best features of the area relate to outdoor recreation access, ease of daily living (available shopping, travel / traffic), and climate.

No experience with more rural areas, but if I had to move to Nevada is would be to Reno for the climate and all the awesome mountain biking access at Tahoe.

You could also look at Carson City. Its not that far from Reno, but might be cheaper, housing wise.

Don't know if this matters, but with Reno, every time you fly in, you hit some good turbulence. Wouldn't bother me, but I suppose it could bother you.

i would prefer Reno/Sparks area. four seasons, and close to tahoe for other options
