Beautiful Handwriting, framing a quote? ETSY?
« on: November 21, 2013, 09:19:46 AM »
My wife and I have been married for 3 years.  There was a serious amount of drama from her side of the family during the wedding.  Long story short, we decided that our ceremony would be just her and I with nobody else there (followed by a 2nd ceremony with family/friends).  We asked her parents and my parents to write something to be said during our ceremony.  Her family rejected the idea, but mine got together and wrote a pretty amazing few sentences that really touched us both.
After all of the wedding craziness we somehow LOST the written quote that my parents had written to us.  My wife was very disapointed and looked everywhere for it.  We gave up completely until last week I dug further and found it!  I'd like to make that quote into something more permanent and would like some ideas from you guys.
I was thinking of having someone from ETSY write the quote out, then getting it framed.  My handwriting is absolutely terrible so I woudn't want to do this myself.  Any other ideas?  Maybe having that etched into something?  stamped into a piece of metal or wood?  I'm open to ideas here..

Thanks,
Ryan

Look around and see if there is a "Hacker Space" or "Maker Space" in your area.  Go over there and ask about laser etching or CNC routing.  Most maker spaces are filled with creative people who love new project ideas.  It's likely that someone will create a unique item that captures your memory.

Perhaps laser etched glass, stone or wood.  Or something routed on a CNC router.

Even better, join the maker space and learn to do it yourself.  Then you'll have a great keepsake AND a new skill.

That sounds like an awesome gift.  :) You could put a listing on Craigslist under Creative Gigs and see if you can find a local person with nice handwriting or a graphic design student or something, it might be cheaper than etsy.

I would also put the original into a pretty envelope and include it with the gift, it would make for a nice surprise on top of the beautiful display version.

There may be some calligraphers in your area who do wedding/party invitations as well.  You can probably just google "calligrapher in (insert your area)."

But Etsy is certainly not a bad idea, however turnaround may be lengthy given the time of year.

I'll bet someone you and/or your wife know has kick-ass cursive. He or she might be thrilled to offer the service as an anniversary gift, or do it for less than you may pay a professional calligrapher. Ask around (friends and family may know calligraphers as well).

I work with a guy who does calligraphy. I'm not sure what he would charge for something like that, but if you like, I can put you in touch with him.

Does it have to be hand written? There are a huge amount of beautiful (FREE) fonts that look like handwriting and script out there, and it would be really easy to pick one, set it on a page and get it printed on nice quality paper.

If you want to go that route, PM me and I can set something up for you probably for free if I have some good paper samples available (I'm a graphic designer).
