Autoshut off for thermostat?
« on: December 05, 2020, 10:02:17 AM »
My bathroom has it's own heating unit that you can turn on and off with a dial. I've asked my roommate many times to turn it off after she's turned it on. And she'll do it if I remind her. But I think it is beyond her abilities and I can't constantly monitor the bathroom.

My bath exhaust fan has a button I can press where it will turn on for ten minutes then auto shut off. Is there something I can replace the thermostat with that will do that? Buying a nest thermostat with wifi capability so I can turn it off remotely seems like overkill.

That looks like a line-voltage thermostat, in which case you can rule out most 'smart' t-stats.

What's the heating unit look like? Is it a small baseboard, in in-wall forced air heater, or something else?

Is it an electric baseboard heater?  I think this is probably along the lines of what you are looking for.

I like this type. The other ones my roommate would just hit 4 hours and that would miss the point.

I don't understand how it would work though. Can I change the temperature?

Perfect, that's a radiant ceiling heater, and they're still made by Broan/Nutone. I'm actually surprised to see the thermostat you have, typically a mechanical timer is used, and you can get them in 15, 30, and 60 minute versions. The only thing you need to do is make sure the one you select is rated for the voltage and current of the heater. It'll wire right in place of your old t-stat.

Yes, line voltage smart thermostats exist.  Note: I have no experience with any of these ...
