Social Security Windfall Calculators?
« on: July 25, 2023, 03:14:27 PM »
I'm working as a teacher in a district that doesn't participate in Social Security. But from previous work I already have my 40 quarters of eligibility. I also have a few thousand in SS income from side gigs each year.

I'll have a state pension and I know this will reduce my SS income because of the Windfall Provision. I have attempted to model the formula in excel but there are a lot of moving parts.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good online calculator that will model this?

My favorite tool seems to handle WEP.

1.  Go to www.opensocialsecurity.com
2.  Check the little box at the top for certain situations / additional input.
3.  Check the third box in the list for Pension.
4.  Scroll to the bottom and click Yes on the pension question radio button.
5.  Follow the tools' instructions from there.

You should be able to get the tool to provide you with both an optimal claiming strategy for your situation, as well as how close to optimal other claiming strategies might be.  To see these results, enter all of your information, click submit, then scroll down a bit further to see "Recommended strategy" and "Test an alternative claiming strategy".

(Edited to fix typo in URL.  Thanks @reeshau!)
