Asus laptop cracked - how to cost effectively replace?
« on: April 19, 2013, 03:22:03 PM »
Apparently these things are easily broken. Didn't drop it but apparently broke in less than a yea based on how I opened it.

Regardless, they said at best buy its $200-$300 to fix.

Any thoughts on how to do this in a more mustachian way?

is it the case?  Or the frame around the display or .... what is cracked?

Does it affect the actual usefulness?  Or is it just cosmetic?

I'm thinking a junker off of ebay might do the trick if you can find one.

Have a look at Dell outlet or Dell Financing refurbs. Get a latitude not an inspiron. Depending on what you want to do - assuming just internet, email, youtube, a Latitude D630 (get one with intel not nVidia graphics) should do you, and they are a good solid computer.

Alternatively, Dell Vostros aren't too bad - 3460 or similar.

OIC.

Well, ebay, then, and get a copy of the laptop's service manual. And a set of small screwdrivers! And take photos of things as you take them apart, if you feel the need!

I broke my screen on my Lenovo last fall.  Ordered one from  LaptopScreen.com.   Received it the next day.  My son installed it.   Had instructions but also used U-tube videos.     It was quite straight forward.    Cost me $62 plus $12 shipping.    Was quoted prices about $200 and more at computer stores.

Or you could use secondary monitor with laptop in its place. I've been doing that with and older laptop instead of fixing its screen. Just haven't bothered with it since I have a work around.

I replaced a broken laptop screen last year by buying another broken laptop (with a good screen). Sometimes a broken laptop of the same model can be found on ebay for less than the screen (I priced screens around 60-70 and got a broken one for 40 inc. shipping). Then you follow the service manual’s instructions to replace (keeping track of screws).

It’s not hard but it does feel intimidating the first time.

You need the exact model of your laptop.  Then, go on youtube or use google to find a video/instructions on how to open the lid so you can access the LCD.  (Usually, I don't even need a video.  It's just a matter of prying the bezel off, or removing half a dozen screws).  Ideally, do this before you order a new part.  Some laptops can have the same model number (e.g. Inspiron 1545) but use different screens (differing in resolution, or in CCFL backlit vs LED backlit).  Once it's open, read off the exact model number of the screen itself.  Now, go on ebay and use the combination of computer model and LCD model to find a matching screen.  Most cost less than $100.  Reverse the disassembly process and you're done.

Ditto to what everyone here has said.  The girlfriend's laptop (also an Asus) had its screen rudely stepped on about a year ago.  Found a replacement screen on eBay for about $60, spent a few hours farting around with it, and it's good as new!  Not too difficult a task as long as you keep track of how everything goes back together.  Laptops tend to be annoying, as there isn't any room for anything anywhere, but her Asus wasn't too bad.

Tons of places on the internets that sell replacement LCD screens, look it up by the laptop's model number. Should be around a hundred bucks. Maybe less if you're lucky.
