This a good/reasonable set of fenders?
« on: March 27, 2014, 06:10:19 PM »
I give in. I want fenders for my bike. Especially before I install a rack onto it.

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Cascadia-Fender-Touring/dp/B00474P0OQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I have 700Cx35mm tires. Eyelets part of the frame (Trek 7500 FX).

If there's a different set of fenders I should look at, by all means recommend me some. Haven't biked over to the LBS to check out their stuff, but I have $50 worth of Amazon points from the CC.

We put these on my Jamis Commuter hybrid a couple weeks ago: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6648XI/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're awesome.

Cool, I'll see if it survives the "think about it for a couple days" phase. I have a strap-on SKS MTB fender that I bought for my old bike. Seems nicely made.

The only Planet Bike product I've owned is a taillight. Plastic mount on it was garbage (broke in two days), so I'm a little leery of the brand now.

I was looking at those full metal fenders on the Mountain Equipment Coop website, but I thought they were too expensive so I just decided to keep the old set I got for free at the community bike shop.

They have the same fenders (I think) you are looking at on Amazon. Not sure though because they are priced under $30, and that would be a first in my book to find something cheaper in Canada than in the USA.

lol I got pretty wet today too, might put my fenders back on over the weekend.

pretty much any full-coverage (i.e. 12 o'clock to 4 on the front, 9 to 3 in the back) fender with mudflaps will work. I don't know of any particularly terrible ones, and they all pretty much install the same.

nitpick: see where there are rivets through the fender? There's a metal bracket that goes across that area between the fender and the wheel. Prettier than having it on the outside, but less functional as water will follow the bracket to the outside of the fenders and dribble onto your toes instead of running all the way down and out the bottom. Much better for that bracket to be on the outside like the PDW's ykphil linked. I couldn't find any that weren't hella expensive though, so I just went with the SKS Longboards. No complaints otherwise, and I knew what I was signing up for.

That's weird, was it a superflash? I've had mine for years and haven't had any problems. I have a spare bracket I can mail you if you want

Nashbar had something similar for a lot cheaper than Amazon too. I'm thinking Amazon may be overpriced. I'll have to bike up to the LBS and see what they have before I waste even "free" money.

It was a Blinky ($10). Can't complain too much given the price. And zipties have held it on for a month or so now.

I have the planet bike Cascadia fenders on my Touring bike with 37mm tires. They are great. The only complaint is that the front rubber mudguard can touch my toe in certain situations, but that's not specific to this fender I'm sure. The front mudguard degraded or tore off after about 3-4 years of use, but PB sells replacement parts so it was easy to replace. Just drill out the rivets and zip tie on the new one. The replacement ones came with plastic 'rivets' but they were too weak to do the job, hence the zip tie.

They work great for me. I haven't had the drip issue that Russ mentions.

For the same $50, I'd definitely go for the SKS over the Planet Bike. Check your fork and rear triangle width to make sure there's 50mm there for 'em; if there isn't, check that there's 45mm for the Planet Bike ones....

There's 50mm at the front...barely. Worst-case, I'll have to shave it down a tad. But I'd rather jigger the higher-quality to fit.

Thanks for the help, all!

Edit: LBS had the Planet Bike ones, but wanted $55 for them. I did pick their brain and buy a combination mini-pump/CO2 injector. My commute and training route stays close to either mass transit or walking distance to home, but I want to start doing endurance rides on top of my daily training. 500 miles a month isn't quite enough ;)

I have planet bike cascadia fenders on two bikes.  They rock, easy install, light weight, do the job well.  MEC sells them for 30$ here:  http://www.mec.ca/shop/fenders/50153/.

I find nearly all fenders are equally as much of a PITA to install and ride with unless you're willing to shell out for SKS Raceblades. I love mine, but they were not cheap.

FTR I live on the Wet Coast and fenders are the most important part of my bike.

Got the SKS Chromoplastic fenders installed today. Haven't had a chance to ride on them but things look nice. I really should trim the stays on the front a tad more but everything should be okay.

Took me about two hours to install. Kind of a PITA but luckily there were no clearance issues. Only weird issue was that the threads for the front stay anchor eyelets were drilled wrong. Had to alter the frame a tad, despite the threads on all the other eyelets being perfect.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
