Asking bank to undo credit limit auto increase
« on: October 05, 2022, 12:24:32 AM »
Hey there

I have a visa credit card (without rewards) that I'm keeping open only for my history. The limit on it was $2000 and, to prevent it from going dormant, I only use it to pay $1.99/month for a local newspaper subscription.

My credit union recently auto increased my limit by $5000 for this specific card. I was surprised because they've never done that before AND I had my credit frozen at the time. A rep from the credit union told me that this auto increase is a new program and that they did a soft pull, so it went through even though I'm frozen.

Because I rarely use the card, I opted out of the auto increase going forward. I was asked if I wanted to roll back (or undo) the increase. I didn't know what to do. Below are some of my concerns and questions:

  • The reason I don't want this specific card to auto increase is because I think it hurt my chances of getting a credit increase for more favorable cards like my CapitalOne cash back that I use daily. Is it true that this action by my CU hurt my chances of getting a limit increase elsewhere?
  • Did this auto increase hurt or help my credit? my CU rep couldn't tell me if it affected my credit at all. They said they don't know and there's no way of knowing until the updated score comes in in a couple weeks.
  • Will asking my CU to roll back and undo the limit increase hurt or help my credit? It would probably look suspicious to lenders if they see a credit limit change up then down quickly. I may be viewed as if I can't control my spending so I asked to reduce my credit limit. Is that a legit concern, or am I being paranoid?

Thank you all for any guidance or insight that you can give me.

I'm voting for paranoid, gently. There's nothing wrong with having higher credit limits, IMO, provided you don't have a spending problem.  It seems that good credit begets more credit.

Is there a reason you want your CapitalOne credit card limit to be increased?  Are you not paying it off monthly?

If you aren't utilizing your credit limit, then worrying about what it is, is being paranoid.

A higher limit will positively impact your credit utilization score.  And, of course, it will be there in an emergency.  It might not be very useful, but it does have those uses.  It also isn't that big of a credit line, anyway.  So, I would not worry about it crowding something else out.
