April spring break ideas from NYC area
« on: January 03, 2019, 08:08:27 AM »
We live in the NYC area. Our (high school and middle school aged) kids’s school system gives them too little time off during the year so this is our one big vacation to take. We are FIRE’d. I had wanted to go to this year on FF miles, but the wife doesn’t want to (I don’t know why). And thanks to Trump’s misguided economic policies, the markets are in the toilet so our 4% is 4% of a lot less than it was last year.

So we are stuck closer to home, driving. We all LOVE skiing but by April, we are done with the winter and we want to go somewhere warm (last year was Hong Kong and Tokyo and the trip was fantastic). We had originally thought of driving to New Orleans, but we are really only good for 4-5 hours of driving a day max (vacation should be fun, not a matter of playing video games and eating chips in the car) and 20 hours of driving means we’d spend the entire vacation in the car. Too much!  Easter Sunday is part of the mix too, we could even leave late Maundy Thursday. I’m a pagan and my wife is a Unitarian so we have no interest in going to services along the way, just mentioning it since things will be closed.

We did a great trip to DC, Colonial Williamsburg, and Charlottesville a few years ago so that’s out. Been to Philadelphia and Baltimore recently, plus they aren’t warm enough.

Where should we go?

What are you folks interested in? There's lots of nice nature areas in the Appalachians that'd be warm-ish by April; great smoky mountains, red river gorge, etc. Could visit DC and see the cherry blossoms (if the timing works), go to Virginia or the Carolinas.

Another New Yorker who has always done driving vacations for various reasons. I would second the Smoky Mountains and staying at a place with an indoor pool, in case the weather doesn't cooperate. Nashville was a surprise for us, too, some great city activities but also gardens and outdoors. Also western Virginia, along the Shenandoah Mountains. Easter is late this year, so the weather would probably be milder (though maybe not warm enough for you). We camped in Shenandoah State Park with a river site that was sublime.

Great Smoky Mountains could indeed be good, if the National Parks re-open by then, or Nashville.

We did Western Virginia and West Virginia a short while back. Don’t want to repeat that, but something like that could be good.

Well, it pays to check FF sites from time to time. All of a sudden, there were seats to Kauai and on a Dreamliner no less! 180,000 miles and $44.00 and we are off to Kauai. So much for the driving trip!

I was going to suggest Myrtle Beach.  Kauai is MUCH better.

We aren't able to really drive more than 5-6 hours either.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
