Apple TV/Chromecast in a dead zone
« on: February 03, 2015, 08:03:58 AM »
I'd love to experiment with Apple TV/Chromecast but the room in which our television lives is sort of a wireless dead zone, and the signal is pretty weak in there.  Is there such a thing as a signal booster for a wireless router, or another possibility you can think of?  Thanks for any ideas.

Yep, you can buy them at any big box retailer, electronics store, or online. They should be in the same aisle as the wireless routers.

If possible, you can also try relocating where your wireless router is located.  Moving it either centrally in your house, or moving it close as possible to the area you want the wireless.

If your issue is overhead transmission lines, you might be shit outa luck.

Yes and depending on the wireless router you already have, it may have a spot for a powered external antennae.  Something like this:

If you have the router that came from your internet provider you'll probably have no such luck though, like me, so your best bet is probably just to get a new wifi router w/ an external antennae, or one that can take one.

You can do a wifi repeater in the TV room but you'd have to run a cable to it.

You actually do not need a cable to run a wifi repeater- it just has to be in range of your router.

True, the placement is just trickier.  If the signal is too weak in the TV room, you probably can't just put the repeater in there, as it won't be able to pick enough signal to strengthen it, unless it's a stronger receiver.  So then you have to put it halfway between the AP and the TV and hope that's enough signal for the TV.  Easier to just get a strong AP that will work through the whole house, imo.  If you have a good place for a repeater though, and can find one cheap, might be a good enough solution.

Thanks, all.  Ryan, it appears your screen name is taken from my favorite Next Generation episode ever.
