Recommend me a watch
« on: July 13, 2015, 08:53:13 PM »
I've had a men's timex ironman triathlonwatch for several years but the metal band keeps breaking. The non-metal option is resin which a) feels gross and b) I tried the first time but it also broke pretty quickly just from taking it off and on.

I don't think it makes sense to get a generic replacement band for this watch because it'll have those two little poky things on the side, which would catch on stuff*.

If I'm looking for a new watch, I want it to be digital, display the date, and have a stopwatch option. What's a long-lasting option?

Try a Casio G-Shock.  One of my friends is very hard on watches and has had his for over 5 years and it's still going strong.  His is also solar, so never needs batteries.

+1.  I have had mine 6 years and it still is just like the day I got it.

Not sure if making fun of how often I break watch bands or making fun of the fact that I own a watch at all...

I happen to love watches for the looks, and I also happen to be not-wealthy, so you just happened to come to the right place.

I have to ask: For what purpose are you wearing this watch? Looks? Sports? Are you trying to match an outfit or literally just tell time?

Crazy as it seems I actually just want to tell time. I have to keep a close track of time at my job, so checking my phone for it is a hassle. Plus, frequently looking at one's phone can come across as rude if people don't deduce that you're just checking the time.

Stopwatch function is also for work. Date function is because I'm a flake who can't remember what day it is.

ETA: okay, also, if you've seen the film Touching the Void? It's terrific. The guy is in this life or death situation and he forces himself to crawl on a broken leg toward survival by being like, 'Okay, in twenty minutes, I'm going to get to that rock.' And then he sets a goal for the next twenty minutes. And I was like, that's a great technique. So I feel like I should have a watch just in case I'm ever fighting for my very life in some extreme situation. Or if I travel back in time and have to pilot a ship across the Atlantic or something.

I mean, really, even for everyday circumstances, it's useful because I have a very poor sense of time passing. If I had enough sense of time to know that I should check the time on phone, that would be half the problem solved.

I recommend the F91W or it's illuminator equivalent: http://amzn.com/B000GB1RAU

The watches themselves will last forever. But the straps are bound to die in a year or two. But these watches are very popular and you get a wide range of replacement straps including NATO straps.

Been using a F91W for the last 6 years - no battery change - just a couple of strap changes.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
