Title: Anyone live in the city and have parking issues with neighbours?
Post by: pudding on April 26, 2019, 10:30:36 PM
I live in a city and on a main street nearby a community centre, library and swimming pool, also a firehall. So there's lots of people parking to use those facilities.

Outside on the street outside each house there's room for 2 compact cars or 1 and a bit larger ones. I have a van I use for my construction business and lots of tools in it so I like to park outside my place where I can keep an eye on it.

My neighbours like to park outside my house too as they have 3 cars, 4 if boyfriend is visiting. Other neighbours have 2 or 3...

It pisses me off somewhat as if I come home after 8pm it's almost guaranteed one of the neighbours parked outside my place as outside their place is already full with their other cars.

Theoretically there's a bylaw that states you can't park outside someones house for over 3 hours. But I wouldn't want to call about such things and never heard of it being enforced.

I could park it in my backyard if I made some adjustments and made a wider sliding gate, but there's parking jams out there too.

In the back there's a narrow lane and the neighbours randomly park out there too, it's only narrow and my van is a sprinter van and quite long, so I need room to manoeuvre it into my spot and I'd have to sort of knock on the neighbours door and ask them to move and I'm sure that would go down well, although parking in the lane is something all know is not permitted, it's got so busy on the main street that people do it anyway.

Though plenty of times it seems they are parked there for convenience rather than necessity.

If I went to the trouble of making said wider gate and then couldn't use it easily because of neighbours partially blocking access I think I'd be even more pissed off.

It's a bit of a mixture of too many cars out there + people not really giving a hoot about parking outside your place anyway + they have more cars than they can park outside own house so why bother/why not just randomly park outside puddings house.

It's often the case in this area that people put white buckets outside their houses when they leave then move them to park when they get back.

I just think that if I start to do that I've f'ing lost the plot!  But yet find it hard not to get pissed off with it all.

What to do?

The community has decided that white buckets signify that you’ll be back. Why argue with the community? Could you use white buckets at the back? Or paint white buckets on the gate?

In the UK the white buckets would be traffic cones (often known as "Joeys" in the North, after Joey Boswell from the TV show Bread who used to use them to keep his parking space - see clip https://youtu.be/h2e_8BbWNhg?t=2m4s which always makes me laugh)
As deborah said, if other people are using white buckets I don't see anything wrong with it. It's better than arguing with the neighbours!
