Anyone here in Healthcare IT industry
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:35:40 AM »
I've been working in Healthcare IT for almost 5 years working with Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMR). I've always done this as an independent consultant and have worked as an at the elbow support person, to a classroom trainer, and currently looking to transition to an analyst (builder) of the system. It's always been lucrative to me as long as I lined the work up consistently. I plan on growing my business and starting my own consulting firm this year and get contracts from hospitals and hire contractors as well. I'm still working on that and in 2017 I should have this done. I've traveled to many states and have worked for several different hospitals working with several different EMRs.

I'm making this thread to network with other users in the forum in the same space and see if we can help each other by networking and growing together. I feel like I have been stagnant in my industry for the past year and looking to get into that next level.

I work in IT, but not the medical field. The only reason I bring that up is that my wife works in hospital administration for a UHS-owned facility, and the way they process information is like something from the '80s. She has me adjusting manually generated excel spreadsheets every few months because no one there knows how to do it.

If you're looking for people who could use your services, they could do with some help!

I'm used to pulling reports from Business Objects, or even straight from a database. These people don't seem to have any decent reporting capabilities, and spend way too much time on paperwork. I believe UHS operates around 200 hospitals around the country.

I work in the industry from the staffing/recruiting side.  We have been talking about expanding into a consulting arm in 2017 as well. Sent you a PM with my info.

Thanks for the response. I sent you a PM Bear.

To Dave: that must be very frustrating. Especially since it's 2017 and there are many tools to expedite the workflow. Has the hospital implemented any type of Electronic Medical Record system?

Cool.  I moved on from healthcare, but am still in IT (now in manufacturing).  I worked for an EMR systems provider for 2 years full time and then another 4 years part time in the evening (while working full time in manufacturing during the day).  Someday perhaps I'll go back into healthcare IT, but we'll see.  Pay is definitely a lot higher in manufacturing...

I'm a physician interested in and with some experience in programming for healthcare IT from the research perspective and programming clinical efficiency tools, if you'd like input from that side.

I've worked for a handful of clinical applications (cardiovascular, GI, and pulmonology)  that interface with all the major EHRs.
However, now I'm in health insurance software implementation.

Masters in Informatics with 5 years IT management, 3 years consulting experience. Currently consulting as a performance improvement specialist with a medical billing software and services company.

Not sure I understand what you are looking to do. Analyst has many meanings. Do you want to write code? Be a trainer? EPIC implementation consultant? There's about a billion opportunities with all the crap HHS is now mandating for medical institutions.

Right now I'm looking to get certified in Epic and then work as a builder for the EMR system. Currently, I'm training Epic for a hospital in Atlanta on a contract.

I also plan on building a consulting team and directly contracting Epic and Cerner consultants for training, support, and analyst teams for hospitals. Opening up my own consulting firm.

Thanks for the link. I looked at that thread. Currently, I'm a contractor but I work through recruiting agencies. I'm just looking to build my own team and get rid of the "middle man".

I would like to know if anyone else has experience through this same process.

My brother-in-law has been a developer at Cerner for over 15 years. I've heard him mention moving into consulting before but not sure exactly where he stands.

I've worked with Cerner before and actually am certified in Cerner. There's actually some good rates if he wants to do consulting. I've been getting a lot of calls for Cerner "Programmer" jobs and they pay pretty well and they are remote.
