Anyone else cross country ski?
« on: February 15, 2016, 04:56:18 PM »
I'm fortunate to live across from a cross country ski park.  Tonnes of groomed trails and actually lit up in the evening.  Awesome workout.  I tend to stick to classic instead of skate and usually a one hour outing burns 1000 calories.  It's also a relatively frugal sport - skis/poles can last decades if you don't get caught up in buying the latest and greatest thing.   Just basically wax for ongoing expenses.  Anyone else cross country ski?

Yes, we do.  It's good fun and good exercise.

Our 2 boys are in a local learn-to-ski club, too.  $70 each for a season of weekly lessons and equipment rental.  Totally worth it!

yup - it's our go-to form of winter exercise, and we probably go x-country ski 20-30 times each winter.
You are absolutely right that once hte startup costs (skis, poles and boots) have been taken care of it's about as frugal a sport as you can find.  Just realized that my skis and boots are both 12 years old.
Plenty of cheap finds for equipment too.

Yes!

My skis are from High School.  So are my boots.  The metal hooks rusted off my boots this year, so lacing them requires serious creativity.  But my costs in 15 years have been zero- my original skis came from Santa ;)

Seriously, though, we used to live in Mpls, and I skied all the time.  Now in central Ohio, we don't get as much snow, and it doesn't stick around, so I only use them a few times a year.  I miss it.  Best winter exercise.

I seriously hope you are at least waxing your skis occasionally (like, once-per-year minimum).  So, a block of wax should cost ~$4 and last multiple years....
