Hey All,
I am an infrequent poster but would love to hear the MMM community thoughts on my plan... Obviously life likes to take its own course but we can lay out a rough sketch and modify as needed!
Current situation:- Working at a soul crushing commission based debt collections job making very decent money (2013 take home after 401k max was $75k)
- GF is in education making pretax $50k (plus pension)
- Living in the Philadelphia area (Southern New Jersey at the moment) and we are always looking for more nature and calmer people & places. This area seemingly the people are very fast paced, keep up with the Jones, McMansions types.
- Not sure if it matters but our combined net worth is approximately $113k with most of it being my 401k. We could probably get that to $180k-$250k by May 2015. Ages: Low 30’s
- For all intents and purposes I roughly calculate our yearly expenses at $32,000; which would leave us needing $800,000 using the 4% rule.
- We do not own any property and can severe rent with no issues when needed.
The Future:We are not satisfied with the area that we live in an and are considering the PNW (Bend, OR is currently on the radar as a match.) We love hiking, bike riding, community events, local everything, gardening, music, etc. I digress... Before jumping 3,000 miles across the country we figured it would be a great time to hike the Appalachian Trail followed by a cross county road trip; before “settling down” and having kids (human and goats ;P)
I expect this hiking and driving adventure would cost approximately $15,000-20,000 (strictly guessing) and would take 6-8 months. We would then formally move, reenter the work force, while building a homestead (a <1,000sq.ft. house on 1+ acre) and eventually ease into retirement and a more self sufficient lifestyle.
tl;dr Should we both quit our job, bounce around for a good part of a year, then move across the country?
