Title: Anyone bought a refurbished iPhone?
Post by: Unique User on October 23, 2018, 12:53:50 PM
I'm using my teens hand me down iPhone 4S, we got it for her in 2012 and it was refurbished when we got it.  I've been using it for the last three years, but it's getting really glitchy and I depend on it for work.  I really wanted an SE once it finally died since I hate big phones, but Apple just discontinued the SE.  I've found two options, a refurbished SE with 128GB memory through refurb.com and seller is back market for $175 or a refurbished 7 through Apple with a 256GB memory for $540.  I'll use a CC that gives an additional one year warranty and back market has a six month warranty.  This seems like a no brainer especially since the SE is 1/3 of the price and I don't want a 7, but I keep second guessing myself.  Has anyone had experience with back market or had bad luck buying a refurbished iPhone?

Thats all me and my family use. Go on eBay and purchase a used one or refurbished one. Find a reputable seller. Usually you have 30 days to return if theres an issue. The only thing you may find is that there will be some small scuffs or scratches but in every case all phones we've every purchased have always had 100% functionality.

I just bought a brand new iPhone 6S through Verizon for $120 ($5/mo for two years). That's the best deal I've seen lately.

Check out Best Buy's site too. They offer refurbished and new old stock iPhones.

If you can wait, keep an eye on Apple's refurb site.  I've seen their lower memory (32G?) iPhone 7 for $379, but they disappear quickly.  Also remember that the Apple refurbs have a new shell and a new battery along with their 1 year warranty.

The Best Buy/Walmart/Target deals always require a contract with a big carrier.  Since I have a cheap MVNO plan, buying the phone outright ends up cheaper for me.

I went from a 4S to a 6 (same size as the 7 and 8), and while I was concerned about the size, my eyes really appreciated the extra screen real estate.  Unfortunately, my 6 has developed a hardware problem after almost 4 years, and I'm on the lookout as well.

You can buy a brand new SE at Walmart for $139.  The problem is that it is locked to one of the Tracfone services.  You can unlock it after paying for service for 12 months.

I bought a 5c refurbished off Groupon of all places... zero issues and it's been chugging along for several years now. (I bought it for my mom who gave it to my dad)

Exactly this, about once every four years for me.

wow, they do have some good deals.  I was in the market for a new 6s, think I'll just get one from bestbuy.  only drawback is they are all 32g, but still for $100.

 thanks!

You're welcome! My daughter is very happy with her 6s. My wife and I have had the 6s for just over two years. We need to make an appointment at the Apple store to see if we qualify for cheap battery replacement before the end of the year.

I've had good luck with MacBooks purchased through Apple's official refurb site. No experience with iPhones, but I imagine they'd be the same, with no noticeable difference from a new one.

I must be missing something - I'm seeing 6S and 7s for $449 to $549.  I also see a 6S for $249 on Verizon, so that is an option also.  Thanks!

The cheap 6S on Verizon was available if you added a new line, which we did. We switched my daughter over from Republic Wireless. I see the deal is still out there on the Verizon wireless site.

Yes, like an earlier poster bought a refub 6SE off Groupon two years ago for maybe $300. It showed up like it was brand new. Still chugging along with no issues except for battery not as strong.

Doesn't this require service with them, and at their prices, quickly negates the deal?

We had so many issues trying to get in touch with our daughter on Republic Wireless that we decided to switch her over to Verizon. It ends up costing $12 more per month for two years, and then drops to $7 more per month. That money is worth it right now, as it was driving us crazy to not be able to contact her when she was out with friends, etc. She's 13, so this'll work for the next five years until she's done high school.

Thanks, we are already on Verizon.  Nothing on Groupon, but I found a 64GB refurbished SE for $199 in excellent condition through refurb.com with a warranty.  Thanks for all the replies, sounds like people have had great luck with refurbished phones and Macs!
