Any tips for buying from ebay?
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:24:07 PM »
I've never gotten anything from ebay (I know, I'm so behind the times) and now I'm looking to make a big (for me) purchase: a used tivo. I tried craigslist but there aren't any good options on there. I'm concerned about legitimacy, so I would love your advice: how do you mitigate risk in terms of getting a product that matches the description and is in good condition? What concerns would you have about buying a tivo on ebay? What would you look for? I'm new to this so all advice, basic and advanced and in between, is very welcome!!

Each ebayer has a rating that shows how many transactions they have had and what percentage of buyers/sellers are satisfied.  I would be very leery of a newer seller or anyone with much less than a 100% satisfied rating (especially if they are not professional ebayers and have less than 100 transactions).  See if you can figure out if the person you are buying from has sold before.  If they have only bought, I would be very careful.  Also make sure they use paypal (I haven't seen a seller not use paypal in years), and make sure you pay with paypal.

Read the description carefully.  If anything is unclear, email the seller.

If the item you are interested in has any live bids (especially multiple), that means the item is competitive.  If you really want the item, you are going to have to bid aggressively.

In addition to what frugaliknowit mentioned, realize eBay is very safe if you follow their guidelines.  Don't trade behind the scenes, like after an auction ends.  Use paypal.  If you're contacted by the seller or others about the same or similar product and are offered the item outside of trading through eBay, don't do it... if it's a scam you won't have any recourse.

I'll add that for items you bid on, as opposed to items you buy at a "buy it now" price, decide what it's worth to you and bid that, meaning bid your absolute max.  If you're outbid, don't raise your bid limit.  Another one will come along soon.  If you want to raise your bid, ask yourself are you raising it because of the competition aspect of being outbid, or because your original bid wasn't your true limit?  The proxy bidding system should work for you if you let it, set your limit and forget about it.
