Camera systems that don't have monthly monitoring fees
« on: February 07, 2020, 08:19:24 AM »
I'm not very tech savvy, but I need a system that can monitor the interior and exterior of my home since we will be traveling quite a bit. I want to be able to "pop in" to make sure all is well when we're out of town. I'd probably want 3-5 cameras.

What are your mustachian recommendations?

We put in a couple of these Netvue cameras, one outside and one inside, for a house we have far away. It sends a notification if there's been a trigger and records in a loop (it's constantly erasing old footage). It's fun to check in and watch the weather changing.

You can host Unifi cameras locally and access them remotely.  No monthly nonsense and nothing cloud-hosted.

We have a couple Wyze cams. Works for us and they seem to be expanding the product family and maintaining the no cost model.

Hard to say exactly what would happen of we had a burglary while away but the peace of mind is somewhat reassuring.

The experts/geeks/seriously way too into cameras group I found is: https://ipcamtalk.com/

I have 3 cameras, run on POE, controlled by Blue Iris on a dedicated Win 7 desktop that's not attached to the internet. Total setup was around $1500 (including desk, not including monitor, mouse or keyboard because I got those free). My parts list was extensive. I've probably posted it somewhere on here, feel free to dig. Installed Sept 2018.
