Any Americans move abroad to FIRE? Questions
« on: September 08, 2023, 04:01:57 AM »
Hi,

I'm curious about moving abroad to lower expenses. Right now I run a business so would love to be in the same time zone so will be looking at Mexico and South/Central America but I also am interested in SE Asia. For anyone that's moved there how much are you spending monthly? How extravagantly do you live? What areas do you recommend going to and any advice for looking for a place? How hard is it to travel with a pet?

Do you own or rent?

Thanks in advance!

Also take a look through the forum.  There are two (maybe more) particular threads I've seen recently addressing most of your questions.  Here's the first I came across while looking through--- https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/post-fire/moving-overseas-in-retirement/
And this one--- https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/post-fire/anyone-planning-to-expatfire-too/

Since you don’t have a particular country or language in mind, you need to consider whether you plan on learning or just talking/living around other Americans. I wouldn’t recommend moving somewhere just because it’s cheap, when you won’t fit in with the culture or have any friends.

I'm looking at Mexico and it's highly unlikely that I would buy there. Maybe after living there for several years and becoming familiar with bureaucracy and corruption, but every expat forum I've looked at for Mexico has said to rent.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
