Amazon - use up GCs or charge and get cashback?
« on: September 16, 2016, 04:42:54 PM »
Hey guys,

Was wondering what you would suggest for Amazon purchases if your credit card (in my case Discover) is offering 5% cashback (qualifying for double-cashback since it was a new card I signed my wife for under that promotion, so 10% back after 12 months). I have a good amount of GCs that I either got as gifts or 50% off from a previous deal somewhere. I have the inclination to 'maximize' on the 10% CB for rewards since it's relatively limited time (the Discover CB at Amazon is through the end of the year while the GCs of course don't expire) rather than to burn through the GCs. I figure, the ideal situation would be to use the GCs always as a 'last-resort' whenever there is no cashback (or additional CB bonuses for that matter). Thoughts?

That's what I'm doing (also have a new discover card). Your logic is sound :)

I'm even thinking the same for lump-sum higher value purchases too. Rather than 'using up GCs' slowly across multiple purchases or quickly across larger purchases, if I can get 10% CB from Discover, just purchase *everything* on the Discover instead.
