Each repair probably took a minimum of 3 days to fix. The engine took at least 5. Not counting days where I knew something was up and needed to get it checked out. There was a 4 month period I was out of the country and it wasn't driven much. I came back and had an issue almost immediately.

The latest incident happened as I came home from a 2 hour drive. Heard a snap and pulled to the shoulder on the highway. Wasn't sure if it was safe to continue, but I finally made it to my apt. Then made it a mile from my mechanic's, had to stop at my high school (smoke coming from friction on the tire/bearing, not a car person).

In the past week, I've had it die on me 4 times while driving out of my parking spot. It seems to do OK for the most part once warmed up, but I noticed an odd sound on my last trip home and it feels like there are short pauses where the wheels aren't getting equal amounts of power. Reverse is used sparingly.

It's not that the repairs by themselves are horribly expensive (although easy for me to say that when I didn't pay for most of them.), but that they're completely unpredictable, but happen every few months on average. With my car now, I have no idea if I can get back home if I go somewhere. I missed at least 3 days of school freshman year due to car troubles. 2 days of work I remember. There would have be more days, but sometimes I got "lucky" and my dad was home so I could take his truck or I borrowed a family member's spare car. Also had issues in high school but can't remember if they made me late/absent.

I think you're projecting the issues you have with this really old car, which is generally an unreliable car over the entire lifetime, onto cars which just basically need an oil change.  You need something to get you to and from school efficiently.  New cars are not a requirement for that!

Your problem is not that this is an old vehicle, the problem is that it's a Ford Explorer. (And seems like it's a lemon even by Ford standards.)   Get rid of it, buy two cheap used Hondas or Toyotas.  Sheesh!

"Reliability is king. I'm at the point where I don't know if the Explorer is going to start the next time. I want a good 5 years of nothing but oil changes and tire rotations. I'm not a car guy and have no desire to be. I may change my own oil, but that's about it. I'll be driving at least 9,000 miles a year just on school. This car is going to get used."

Just my .02 here.... You're a college student so I assume you at least have half a brain. You're asking the right questions but not accepting the answers.

Here's my take on it. Once I read your quote above I had to say something. From what I gather, you want to buy convenience rather than try to work with something that is less than...  You're not willing to learn about your car so you will ALWAYS be at the mercy of the mechanics... I bet they salivate when they see you coming because you have expended absolutely zero effort to learn about your car. You are correct; it is expensive. That's because you have to pay them to do stuff you might be able to do yourself. I'm not saying to try and fix your own transmission but you should at least be willing to make an effort... (It's truly not that hard)

Imagine when you have a house and things need repaired. Are you going to keep calling the repair man because you have no desire to be a plumber? What would MMM say?  He'd probably punch you repeatedly in the face.

As for the cheap used car/ high mile car argument I can confirm that it is nonsense... IF you were to get a basic understanding of a car and how it works, you could find a decent used one super cheap on CL- yes a used/higher mile car is going to need attention. They all do. Buy it right and you'll be ok.
I have a 208k mile 97 Honda. I think I have around $3k into it and have been driving it daily with no issues for the past 3 years! I purchased it with 150k.  I recently found a cheap 99 Ford Escort for my father with 150k for $1500... He drives it everyday.  These aren't pretty cars or fashionable but they do the trick and are cheap.

If you must have a car there are alternatives. You just need to be open to getting your hands a little dirty so that you will be a better informed individual.

Seriously, and I am not a student at all.  We had a 1987 Camry my parents gave us, when we were in school.

I just don't understand why you keep jumping in here trying to justify your extremely foolish purchase. No matter what you say, nobody is going to get on board with it because it's a truly dumb idea to buy a new vehicle when you are already in debt.

If you want to make a wise financial decision, buy a reliable used car. Not a notoriously bad Ford Explorer, a 90's Toyota or Honda that is under $5,000.

Um ... the OP hasn't posted to this thread for 4 days.  Their last post was a kind of joking one, and the one before that was the OP quoting the OP saying:

I get that a new car is too much
I think the OP gets it.  Now maybe helpful information about how to find/buy a reliable used car?

As my contribution, someone posted a link to one of these posts in another thread, and I definitely made a point of bookmarking them for some later date when I or someone I know has to buy a car.  I don't think there's one distinctively for used cars, but I still think some general information about sales tactics and car sales processes might be helpful:  http://www.edmunds.com/confessions.html

It's easy to spend money to fix problems. That's what most people do. Most people work until they die doing something they hate so they can afford to pay for things they don't need or could do themselves.

I support the idea of becoming mechanically inclined and fixing things yourself. All of the repairs you've mentioned I could have done myself for about 1/10th the price. Nobody is born a mechanic, you learn by doing and first you have to try. Working on cars has never been easier, there are internet forums for every make and model with members who will walk you through any type of repair. It may not always be fun, but it becomes fun when you can replace wheel bearings for $20 instead of paying $200.

I'm driving an 18 year old car with 216k miles on it that I have personally rebuilt the engine and transmission. I'm into it $2200 total. While you drive around in fear of breaking down at any moment, I drive with complete confidence knowing that I can fix anything that could possibly go wrong with my car.

My advice is buy a $2000 Japanese car and ask for a Craftsman tool set for Christmas.

OP, obviously lots of advice here, most of it going one way.  The only thing I would add is just this: most of us are older than you, have been where you are and are speaking from experience.  If nothing else, maybe see if that resonates with you.  There's more than the surface arithmatic or what car is best, etc. here.  There's a lot of hard-earned wisdom from most of us who have been dumb students and wish we could go back and change things.

For many more reasons than the car, I would sell everything and move within a ten-minute walk of campus - TODAY.  Every university has a student area with tons of apartments needing roomies.  Get your butt to campus and just live the university experience.  Money aside, you'll get so much out of that more than you'll get out of living at home, commuting and working when you could be spending 18 waking hours studying, hanging out drinking coffee and chasing girls.  You'll never have that again, but you will have cars, commutes, jobs and responsibilities which make your current ones seem like nothing.

Oh, and you don't need a car, let alone a brand new one.  That's just crazy talk.  If you insist on disregarding what everyone is telling you, then at least buy yourself a used civic or corolla that costs no more than $3000, cash.  It will get you through college and into your first job.  That just a few short years away.

Good luck.

+1

I would live close to campus with a beater economy car. Hang out with friends, go to house parties,  meet women, play stupid pranks on people, etc. Once you get the full-time job that kind of fun will likely be far less frequent. Mustachianism aside, I would rather spend that new car money on a beater car and beer.
