Age Old Job Delimma
« on: September 22, 2015, 08:24:25 PM »
23 with a pretty serious GF one DS 3 weeks old.

Quit my job to be around more after the C-section because 2 weeks of fmla just wasn't enough looking to go back to work soon I have two different jobs that can be accepted anytime I want  and it's really going to boil down to time vs money

Job 1.. Go back to job of 3 years beef packing plant 60-80 hours a week $70k annual....really soul sucking stressful and physical wage slavery but for the very LCOL area I am in it is one of the best jobs to be found in my area < 1 mile from home and food cost reducing benefits another pro is I've done the work before and I am pretty darn good at it...

Job 2...Bindery and press over night shift 40 hour work week probably come to $35-$40k annual never done this kind of work before but the overnight shift is something that interests me and opens up options for me

I know I'll be the only one who knows what to do but really just need some Insight and maybe a kick in the ass to do the right thing

Tough choice. My pick would be job 2 simply because I refuse to work over 40 hours a week.

Job 1 and 2 are, by math, the same payscale. Just that with 1, you work twice as many hours. With 1, you will never see your little one or GF. With 2, you have the option to do a side gig, or get some schooling for other job possibilities.

Personally, I would search for Job #3 that pays me somewhere between Job #1 and Job #2, but works the hours per week of Job #2, during the day.

Job #1 is (to me, personally) way too many hours for not enough money. I wouldn't work those amount of hours period, but I certainly wouldn't even consider that amount of work hours per week for that amount of money.

Job #2 is an overnight shift. I won't work overnight. You'll be sleeping during the day, so family time won't be a priority and everyone I've ever known who works night shift jobs, tend to wind up being incredibly unhealthy.

But that's just me :)

Right now leaning towards the second option but re-doing the math would be only $30-35k annual but could work like 10-15 hours a week elsewhere to boost it up along with slowly taking online courses....I know with this option I will probably never obtain FIRE but that option one job will always be there If I change my mind

Congrats on the new baby!

I've worked 80 hour weeks but it does something to your body/soul that makes it not worth the money.

I think job #2 might work.

But agree  you need to keep looking as well. I'm guessing you think "nights are great because I have the days to be with the baby" but the reality is that night shift work is hard on your body and you do have to sleep sometime...practically impossible with a baby anyway.

Good luck! You're young, so if you're already MMM, I imagine you'll be fine regardless of what you choose.

Yeah it's taken me a whole month to finally get out of 12-15 hour work days 5-6 days a week finally getting some relaxing in!!!! And I do owe my desire for FIRE to that job

No possibility of working half-time at job #1?

At best I could cut it back to 55-75 hours a week.
Job one has better benefits as well after some discussing with GF I think the plan (for this hour) is to go back to job 1 and pump out hours and let GF stay home a little longer

Have you considered marrying your baby's mother to make sure she gets any available spousal benefits if something bad were to happen to you at one of these jobs? I'm sure you're smart about how you work, but those are big-ass machines you're dealing with.
