Advice needed: family loan.
« on: April 18, 2023, 02:41:44 PM »
Edit: I'm taking your advice and distancing myself from this decision. My brother and mother have both asked for my input, I'll tell them that it's none of my business.

This is between your mom and your brother, and none of your business AT ALL.

Or should we accept that shit happens in life and that we need to help each other out without keeping score?

100% this.

My parents have helped each of their kids out in various ways, and I'm sure it would come out unequal if everything were added up (none of it was as simple as straight up cash -- or maybe it was???).  None of us want to add it up.

Advice needed.

...

What would you guys do???

ETA: my mother and brother have both asked for my input, as I'm the financially savvy one of the bunch and executor of my parents' wills.

It's not your money. If your mom wants to be generous what's it to you? I would apologize for getting involved and stay out of it.

#1: what the rest said.  Not your money.  She could take it to Vegas, or blow it on a Cassanova.  As things go, it's not frivolous.

#2: Having said that, is this something your mother can't afford?  Will she put her own financial life in jeopardy?  If not, see #1.

If she was giving out $100k, I might want to understand if this was an advance on inheritance, or something.  But this amount of money is a couple of big trips, which she probably won't do for a while now, anyway.

Good that you are protective of her, if that's it.  Inheritance does not need to "come out even."

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
