Title: Advice for tax career
Post by: walkwalkwalk on September 15, 2017, 08:26:19 PM
I am going through a career transition. Honestly I do not know what I am looking for in a job. I am a tax accountant and my first job after college was in public accounting, so long hours. But I wasn't challenged. Next job I had (my last one) was more challenging but didn't feel I could be successful.

I  need to find some things that is the right fit, however I usually take the first job that comes along.

Any advice?

Have you spent some time browsing job listings (literally any job listings), and noting things that look interesting? Even if they aren't tax related?
Just because you've spent your time so far as a tax accountant, doesn't mean you need to do that forever.

If you do want to stay in the tax/accounting arena, have you thought about starting your own business? is there something you can add to the industry that you haven't seen, or haven't seen done well?

Have you considered looking into jobs in Internal Audit or Internal Controls (Sarbanes-Oxley)?

Have you considered looking into jobs in Internal Audit or Internal Controls (Sarbanes-Oxley)?

Most of those, from what i have seen require public accounting audit experience, or just out of school with a focus in that area in school. I have never taken an internal audit class before.

Actually, it is possible to get a job in that area without specific audit experience.  I had 20+ years in tax and applied for an IC job just over a year and a half ago. I really enjoy the challenge, you get to see many different parts of a company.

I second looking into internal audit jobs.  I am not a CPA nor do I have public accounting experience but I worked almost four years at a multinational in the internal audit department.  Best job I ever had.  It was a great lifestyle job.

Even though the listings may say they want xyz, your tax experience should be a plus.
