Herring?
« on: December 02, 2015, 03:55:33 PM »
A local fish monger is selling fresh pacific herring at a charity sale this weekend at $20/20lbs. I've never had it before and am unsure of whether this is a good deal  and whether I'd be able to convince my family to eat it.

Should I buy some? Any good recipes?

Look in any Swedish reciepe and it will have herring 😀. I like it best put together two and two, meat side together, with fresh dill in between then breaded and fried in butter. Served with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and browned butter. Good stuff!

Absolutely! Herring is yummy and really good for you. I pickle them but also do a variety of spicy dishes. Eat a bunch of the tinned variety as well. I hope you end up enjoying them. That's a good price!

Although I'm a decently good cook, I've never cooked (or eaten) small fish so I have some super newb questions. Do you eat the bones? What about the skin?

Presumably the fish will be gutted, but with the heads and tails on. I'll want to remove the heads and tails before I freeze the excess, right?

Did anyone else think the question was about how best to use the herring to cut down the mightiest tree in the forest?
