acronyms on these forums...
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:59:49 AM »
I can't figure out a single acronym on these forums.   I might know someone's talking about their spouse, but what does DH stand for?

And if anyone can offer clarity on any other acronyms you use on these forums, PLEASE share!

Thank you!!

I say DINK out loud a lot now thanks to these forums. My fiance used to be all "Huh?" but after I told her what it means she laughs when I do it.

DINK!

LOL this is perfect! I didn't know this one.

Here are a few more:

FIRE - Financially Independent/Retired Early
SAHM - Stay at home mom
MIL - mother in law
FIL/SIL/BIL - You get the picture
YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary (aka, disclaimer)

Here's a whole fun list: http://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f47/acronyms-and-slang-frequently-used-on-the-forum-34884.html

We should make some up.

BANN: Broke-Ass Non-Negotiator. Someone in dire straits who asks the forum for advice, but has a huge list of expenses that are "non-negotiable".

FPSS: Face Punched, Still Stupid. (It might be against forum etiquette to use this to describe other people, but I could use it to refer to myself.)

GBIT: Go Back In Time. "Advice" that involves undoing the past, e.g. "You shouldn't have had those four children."

GE: Good Excuser. Someone who uses a possibly-legitimate but highly situation-specific reason to invalidate advice. For example, "My rare genetic condition makes me allergic to pay-as-you-go cellphone plans... I can't believe that arrogant MMM didn't consider that."

IWIFTSS: I Wish I'd Found This Site Sooner.

IWIFTSBBMV: I Wish I'd Found This Site Before Buying My Vehicle.

NMS: Non-Mustachian Spouse.

Also, a real one we forgot:

SWAMI: Satisfied Working Advanced Mustachian Individual.

It's like you read my post history and then described me with acronyms.

DH - Dear Husband
DD - Dear Daughter
DS - Dear Son
DW - Dear Wife

oh.  I always thought the "D" stood for something different.

I formally propose adding to the lexicon: WWMMMD? (What would MMM do?)

THIS ONE! Actually has slipped into usage IRL (in real life) my hubby (who isn't on the forums) started unconsciously slipping it into conversations. It is a easy reminder for both of us when we are pondering something that we don't really need.

I love Gerard's suggestions too :)

Really, what do they use, SO (significant other)?  Or ISO (in-significant other) as one poster on another forum uses tongue in cheek.  I am used to DH and DW on other forums, though I always interpreted them as darling hubby/wife.

me as well, although I've seen it since on the ramsey forums and (less so) over at bogleheads.  I'm still questioning what the "d" really means.

how about SNICKERs? - Student No Income Children/Kids Eventually Really.  Ok - maybe a bit of a stretch... but there's a lot of students around with little/no income and it's better than "SNI"
@ spartana - what about being a STIINKER (Single Total Income in Investments No Kids Early Retiree)?

We also left out FP (Face Punch)

These are seriously amazing. NMS we could really use! or NMSO for those who are unmarried.

SPINKER is amazing too!!

I thought DH/DW/DD/DS were pretty universal on the internet.

Yeah.  I learned about it when I was on a wedding board planning my wedding.  And I knew it as dear not darling.  Maybe a generational thing?

DS - Dear Son

Unless it stands for "Dear Senator," as it, apparently, did in another thread.
