ACA "Family Glitch"
« on: November 02, 2017, 08:51:46 AM »
I am again looking for solutions for health insurance, and want to know if this issue has been resolved.  I have good healthcare through my job, but it is cost prohibitive to add my family to my plan.  My wife works as a contractor and we have a young child.  Based on our income, we would be eligible for a subsidy for marketplace coverage, but it asks you if you have "affordable" health care through an employer.  The marketplace staff had no idea what I was talking about, so I figured you guys would probably know more.

Some numbers:  We gross around 80k a year.  I pay <200$/month for my coverage, but the cost would jump to 1200$ a month to add my family.  It looks like I can add a marketplace plan for both my wife and daughter for around 750$ a month, but with a huge deductible.

Also, open enrollment for my job is September.  If I choose a marketplace plan can I just cancel it early next year?  Or do you have to pay it for the full year?

Thanks.

I believe the answer is here:

https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/affordable-coverage/

You pay the premiums every month, so you don't need to pay the full year. You can also always make changes to your application if you have a Qualifying Life Event, such as a change in your job-based coverage.
