My auto insurance has an optional towing policy.  It costs something like $10 a year?

I pay for roadside assistance through my auto insurance (Progressive) and it's $5 per 6-month term, so it's also $10/year like yours.  It sounds very similar to AAA coverage:

http://www.progressiveagent.com/claims/roadside-assistance.aspx
  • Towing for 15 miles to a shop of your choice, or if no services are within 15 miles, to the nearest service station.
  • Flat tire change
  • Battery jump-start
  • Emergency fuel and fluid delivery
  • Locksmith service
Typically any one of those items could run you $100 for a call-out if you don't have a membership of some kind, so even using it once every 10 years means you're ahead of the game.  OTOH, I've been a Progressive customer for 15 years and I don't recall ever having to use their roadside service, so I guess I'm their ideal customer as far as that is concerned.

I would never use insurance for towing or such a low value thing. That stuff goes on your CLUE and could effect your rates. best to use a motor club, doesn't have to be AAA's.

Roadside assistance is not the same as filing a claim.

if you are filing a claim on an insurance policy, it goes on your CLUE. Do towing claims really not get recorded? I doubt it.

Only information regarding losses and payments for covered losses under a policy for which an insured has filed a claim are included in the CLUE. No other non-loss information such as towings and mechanical problems is included. An insured can review his CLUE report by contacting LexisNexis who maintains the CLUE database.
