Mustachian champagne?
« on: December 29, 2014, 04:52:02 PM »
So what are my fellow Mustachians going to bring home to drink on New Year's Eve? I found that I could buy champagnes and "champagnes" (different kinds of sparkling wines) at the Giant Eagle for prices ranging from $7.99 for a bottle of Cook's California Champagne (brut), to over $200 for a bottle of I-don't-know-what, because I didn't even dare look. They had Veuve Cliquot for around $60 a bottle, but no Korbel, which was something we used to buy in NY for around $11 a bottle. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Sparkling Muscatel, of course, one of the finest wines of Idaho!

(Sorry, I have no real answer for this, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity.)

You should be able to get a good bottle of Prosecco (Italy's version of sparkling wine) for $10-$15. I've had some of the best champagnes you can get, yet Prosecco is my more mustachian fallback. La Marca is a decent one I buy fairly often and it has a nice, pale blue label. Cheers!

Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) is another good option.  Freixenet is actually quite good and you can buy 2 bottles at Costco for $14.  I avoided trying any wine that had a TV commercial for many years because I was a wine snob.  I still enjoy good wine, but I'm no longer a total wine idiot.

If you have a trader joes near by R.S.V.P brut is a good sparkiling wine at 7 bucks. Even in our spendy days, when we stuck to 30 to 80 dollar bottles of wine we still used it for mimosas.

There's tons of good, cheap options out there. But, my go-to for bubbles is Spanish cava. Enjoyable bottles can be had for a small fraction of Champagne. I'll happily guzzle Cristalino or Segura Viudas, which can be found darn near anywhere, for around $7. If you want to go completely fucking nuts and throw those quarters in the air like you just don't care, you can pick up Avinyo for a rap superstar price of $12, but it's unnecessary and just gratuitous to throw your wealth around like that.

My favorite affordable sparkling wine these days is Sofia Coppola blanc de blanc. Sooo yummy and usually around ~15 a bottle. Comes in a pretty pink cellophane wrapper.

VC is overrated, in my opinion. I prefer a basic cava or a prosecco. A vinho verde is also nice but not a true sparkling wine. More of a slight effervesce I'd say. We did once enjoy a Dom with take out (wings and fries), I believe it was a 2002. Or a 1998. Can't remember though I would recommend, whatever year it was.

Vin de Idaho!!  "An excellent choice…it should be, for 95 cents."

Loved it, I.P.Daley. Click on the link, everyone.

Spanish Cava. Italian Proseco. Can find decent qualities of both for pretty inexpensive.

Trader Joe's is my go to for cheap (but still good) wine.

For those in states with sensible laws, Aldi is selling an Italian Moscato for $6 and a German Brut sparkler for $8. I also saw a boxed sparkling wine in my local wine store today but I don't remember the brand.

We will probably be drinking La Petite Frog Picpoul di Pinet, which, while not a sparkling wine, is an really good French wine from Langedoc. I actually bought it for cooking but after we tried it tonight my husband confiscated it for drinking instead, saying it tasted too good to waste on food. It is pricier than other boxed wines but it is really a nice surprise in the glass.

One of the many advantages of being in France, picked up a bottle of champagne for 11€. Still expensive, cava and prosecco can both be excellent substitutes (but that's like recommending "beer", there's a lot of choice out there!).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
