How do working Mustachians spend the weekend?

I am not originally from Upstate New York either, but many of the folks in my neck of the woods are avid hunters coupled with many in the region being quite frugal out of habit or necessity.  We have a neighbor who has recollected times where his family had skinned and ate squirrels.  There was a time not long ago that many families in my region raised a pig to be butchered in the fall for winter eating.  The region is economically depressed and has been so for a good deal of time from my understanding. 

I am not sure what the original poster's intentions were for the skunk, but around these parts I don't bat an eye to any wild animal being fair game for hunting, consumption, etc.

I have learned a lot living here.  They are inventive and resourceful people and I hope to glean as much as I can.  Living off the land is alive and thriving here.

Oh yes, I live near farm country too and know a lot of people who butcher their own. It's not a strange concept to me. I was just wondering what was happening with that particular skunk (and looking for some recipes). Thanks Arbor33 for filling it in.

Last weekend I made marmalade from some grapefruits that were on sale. Canning is my favorite weekend activity because it makes me feel smug;)

Well, I've got kids, so it's generally spent grocery shopping, bulk cooking, and hanging out with the kids.

I have a few guys who work with me who are in their 20's and frugal.  They do a lot of stuff like hiking, backpacking, and fishing.  They are planning a big backpacking trip in the forest nearby in March.

Ours was spent doing errands - grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, taking the little one for his annual physical, etc. - and seeing friends.  We had a fantastic dinner at a friend's house (who I've known for 31 years) with her family.  And then we had a few friends over on Sundayafternoon to celebrate my son's upcoming birthday.  I made chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting - divine!  All the free time was spent reading and preparing for our upcoming one-year camping/road trip around the country.  Preparing for that tends to take up most of our time these days.  This past weekend we worked out how we'll be approaching our cell phones since my work will obviously not be picking up the tab for mine anymore.  My husband is going to ditch his altogether and I'm going with the $10 Airvoice plan.  This was the first weekend in a long time that we didn't get a hike in, but we'll be doing plenty of that very soon.

Typical weekend activities:
- walk the dog
- bike to the grocery store to do our weekly grocery run, sometimes bike to costco as well
- do some work on our basement (in the process of renovating it)
- catch up on some reading (often bike down to the library)
- watch a movie with the wife
- do some cooking/baking for meals for next week
- invite friends over for a dinner party
- bike/car maintenance
- cleaning the house

If you look, there's always something that needs doing . . . the key is to avoid being idle.  Being idle leads to boredom and a pile up of chores to do.

We took the little guy to the zoo (free), made sure to park in the neighborhood close by to avoid the $20 parking fee, and packed a lunch (for the little guy too) to avoid $10 hotdogs. Had a great time.

Also, spent some time cooking a large batch of soup for the week, cleaned up the house better (as we often do on weekends), did a lot of laundry, and bottled my homemade mead that has been bubbling away for 3 months.

We typically try to get out of the house once a weekend for some sort of cheap/free "adventure" around the city.
