Anyone live in Golden, CO?
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:08:45 PM »
Just wondering how bikeable Golden is, and whether the cost of living is as astronomical as I think it is.  Thanks!

I wasn't going to post yet, bc H is just sending his application in today and who knows if they'll even call him.

But.  I have the same question about cost of living, biking, and throw in schools too.  And also, anyone know how working at the renewable energy lab is?

A quick look at realtor. com was not reassuring.

I don't live in Golden, but I work around there.

As far as bikeable, there are tons of trails cutting through Golden, most notably the ones paralell to Cherry Creek, 6th Ave and S Golden Rd. These are non-street trails and should be able to get you all over town by bike. I don't think Golden has the same kind of Biker/Pedestrian v. Driver culture as Boulder. Where cars in Boulder will stop at a crosswalk where there is no stop sign just to let a person cross, or are happy giving a bicyclist their space, lots of drivers in Golden come from Denver and usually lack the respect to be very nice to bikers sharing the road.

That being said, there's one bus route through town, the 16. It can also get you all up and down the town. Route 16 will also take you all the way to Downtown Denver, as will the regional bus GS.

HCOL: Food is a smidge more expensive in that area, in my experience. I haven't ever purchased groceries from the King Soopers on S Golden Rd, but... Shopping at the King Soopers in Applewood v. shopping at the King Soopers on 58th in Arvada yields a ~10% difference for me, on some occasions - which is partially food being slightly more expensive, but also the extra variety at the Applewood store (huge cheese assortment, fancy deli, fresh sushi bar... Very fance, much impulse buy.). Applewood also merchandises their organic produce better, so you're a lot more likely to find and pick up organic whatever before you find regular whatever. :)

HCOL: Housing is ridiculous. This mostly has to do with the college, I think. There are very, very few frugal options in this category if you're talking about living in Golden. Like I said, I work in Golden, but I live in Arvada, and I'm considering moving to the area around 44th and Kipling to cut my commute in half. I think this is the most optimal place to be if you want to approach Golden from it's north end via Golden Fwy/44th Ave. However, if you want to approach from Colfax or 6th Ave, there are more economical options in the area of Alameda and Union, or along Colfax... But if you're going to live along Colfax, look closer to Kipling, or try to stay generally west of Wadsworth.

HCOL: Other things are pretty much par for the course!

I don't know anything about the schools except what the internet tells me.

Also can't speak to NREL down in Golden, but my mom's room mate last year loved her field work for them up toward Boulder. :) So there's that?

Thanks for the info, Kayla.  I am just not ready to live somewhere where I can't bike to work (as in, live in a cheap house near my workplace).  I think I'm going to have to say no to Golden :(

@MayDay - both of my neighbors work at NREL. They're developing some building energy efficiency software (at least I think that was the deal last time I asked). They seem to like it - been there for a while at least. I could possibly put you in touch if you want, or pass along specific questions.

What is your max distance for biking to work? 44th and Kipling is right along the Cherry Creek Trail, and would put you apx 7mi from 10th St and Ford St, and allow you to take the trail all the way there and back. Also see the 9mi route via S Golden Rd, if your potential job is on the south end of Golden instead.

Hey, thanks for the offer!  At this point he is just applying online, so if he gets a call I'm sure we will have a ton more questions.  The job he is applying for is biofuels related, so probably not the same department, but general workplace culture info will be of interest.  At this point my main question is if they will pay enough to justify the high cost of housing :)

We would want to live within 5 miles of work while also being in decent schools, which may seriously limit our housing options.  We currently pay 1600$ a month for mortgage + taxes/insurance so its going to be quite a shock, I imagine.  Does anyone want to throw out a price for a 3 bed/1.5 bath rental or home purchase in that geographical area (5 mile radius of NREL)?  Tiny square footage is fine, our last rental house was 760 sq ft.

PS. Didn't measure exactly on all of these... So they're ~5mi :)

Eh, those aren't bad at all.  Is it just expensive to buy?

I looked on realtor.com and found quite a few for sale in the 275-450K range.  Huh.  Could be worse, I guess.  When I hear about crazy Denver housing prices, I imagine higher than that.  Of course I am picking randomly and maybe they are horrible schools or something.

Not generally speaking. It's almost always cheaper to buy here, unless you're not planning on staying long. Denver is a pretty healthy HCOL area, tbh. As in, I've only got a high school diploma and my DH has a GED, but between the two of us, we can easily rake together 40k-50k/yr + benefits, and switch jobs inside of a few weeks if we have to. Choosing to be frugal stretches that money toward FIRE.

Re Schools: If you're looking nearby to Golden, or around Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, etc... Honestly, almost anywhere in Jefferson County.. You're going to get good schools. Jeffco is known for their school system. People buy homes where good schools are, so housing on this side of town is a little more expensive.

I haven't lived in Golden since I was in college (8 years), but now live just east in Lakewood (near Kipling mentioned previously) but I would agrue that it is a) quite bikeable and b)that good housing deals can be found outside of Golden proper (where rent is sky high because of Mines). You can certainly find housing under what you're paying currently.

Keep in mind the availability of rentals is likely to increase in April-June, yeilding a wider variety of options.

Thanks for the info!  Likely we won't be going to Golden now, looks like I won't get the job.  Oh well, was worth a shot.
