PLease help me with a vehicle conundrum...
« on: May 24, 2016, 02:16:33 PM »

For varied reason I ended u with two vehicles.  I should have avoided buying another but at the time with great anxiety it seemed to make sense to purchase another one.  I want to sell one and would like to get some perspective.

Vehicle 1: 2001, Eurovan, 120K miles, it is in pretty good shape.  It requires an expensive fix every so often.  It gets about 20 MPG on a good day.  I enjoy it and the room it provides when I travel.  Also the possibility of using the convertible bed in the back seat.
the KBB value is $5500.  but, listings on Autotrader are for anywhere from $8000 to 15000.  I listed it for $10900 on CL hoping to get maybe 10 or 9.  In the past when I tried selling it I would get a couple of people interested but no firm offers.  The thing is on one hand that these vans are not made anymore and on the other they are 0ver 10 years old etc...

Vehicle 2: 2013, Jetta Sportwagen, 44K miles, it is in great shape.  it gets about 30 MPG.  I like that it is a newer vehicle, the standard transmission, and the better gas mileage.
The book value is about $10000.  I listed it for $10900 and no one called about it.  I then did a search on Autotrader and found a few from $11000 to $15000.  I then raised the price to $11900.  There is someone pretty interested that is looking at it on Thursday.

Or sell both a buy something else....

Do you owe anything on either vehicle?

How often do you travel that you need the extra space in the van?

What are your commute and other car transportation needs?

Do you have other debts? Emergency savings? Retirement savings?

I think if you dropped the Eurovan price you could sell it, and be left with the in better shape car. I was doing some used car browsing recently and think you were too aggressive in your ask on the van--it's fifteen years old with over 100k on it (plus mediocre mileage and costly repairs) so listen to KBB and don't get overly greedy.

I'd sell the eurovan and keep the sportwagen.

I owe about $3000 on the wagon

How often do you travel that you need the extra space in the van?
Just a few times a year.   It is not critical but more comfortable.

What are your commute and other car transportation needs?
    Very little.

Do you have other debts? Emergency savings? Retirement savings?

No other debts, I have a pension and minimal retirement savings.

If you were to buy a car today, what would it be?

If not one of those two, consider selling them both and buying a used model of whatever it is you really need/want.

I would keep the newer vehicle. You will be farther ahead financially by doing that. It has low miles.

Personally if it were me I'd sell both and buy a Toyota or Honda, but that's because I'm not a fan of VW. IMO they are expensive and hard to work on compared to Japanese cars.

  Thanks everyone,

The wife agreed to keep the van and the car in her name.  I will continue driving the VW wagon.  I think that selling now I would be taking the most depreciation possible.  I will probably keep it for 10 15 years or more....
