'Self help' books worth reading
« on: May 23, 2012, 09:48:45 AM »
I'm just finishing up reading The Magic of Thinking Big, which MMM has mentioned a few times.  Glad to have stumbled across it like that, wouldn't have read this book otherwise.   Also just finishing a book called Scream Free Parenting, which is also quite good.

Got me thinking that I must be missing lots of other good books like this!  I used to ignore this whole genre as overwrought and hokey, but am coming around that there are some gems in there.  So thought I'd start a thread to discuss other titles worth a read.  Any topic, really, as long as they are good and will help with self growth.

Thanks!

No More Mondays by Dan Miller is a pretty good book I've recently read.

+1 for Your Money or Your Life. It contains practical advice and does a good job of questioning the status quo.
I would also recommend the original self help book, "How to win friends and influence people." The writing style is very corny but I've been diligently following the steps and it's kinda fun.

'The Primal Blueprint' by Mark Sisson
Also thinking about picking up 'The Paleo Solution' by Robb Wolf for the sole reason that he does a lot of face punching in terms of nutrition, exercise, and physiology. Kind of the MMM of the health world.

Not sure if this fits as a "self-help" book, but: What the Buddha Taught is pretty handy for me and has fit well with mustachianism.

Basically it's encouraged me to spend more time saying "why do I want that widget?" which is a long enough distraction to make me not want so many widgets.

7 Habits is lying around my house right now because my sis-in-law has been reading it.  Maybe I should check it out.

Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength
Roy F. Baumeister & John Tierney

Explores the science behind willpower, how it functions, and how to improve it. It's more science than self-help, but you can infer lots from the studies he presents. It's helped me a lot in getting my life in order, losing weight, and getting shit done.
