"Nut Milk Bags" - most frugal solution

I just made soy milk last night because...delicious!

I used plain old cheese cloth from the grocery store doubled over a couple times (seems like there are different quality cheese cloths that might not need to be doubled over?) to separate the okara...but this was just really messy and is not easily reusable. There seem to be many different products like "nut milk bags," but those seem crazy expensive.

What is the best solution others have found? Just using fine metal sieves? Using a cloth of some kind? What kind? Muslin? What should I look for?

My neighbour uses old nylon stockings (washed before using, of course).

Most frugal?  Sew some from used pillowcases or sheets.  I prefer to make mine as tubes, with a casing for a string to hang it from a cabinet door handle.  Once finished you can turn the tube inside out and rinse before washing.  I use plain white color and bleach when washing.

I've been told to use paint strainer bags like these:

Haven't tried it yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I've heard using paint strainer bags, but then read else where the bags are treated. So I would check first... if that doesn't work, it might just be best to invest in an organic set of nut mylk bags. I've seen them decently priced on Amazon.
