All from a 401K sitting in an IRA.  Recommendations?

You want random people on the internet to tell you how to invest 400k without knowing things like:

Your age, dependents, income/stabilty, housing, financial goals, retirement age, risk tolerance, other assets, or debts?

Your situation is similar to what I encountered when I liquidated all my taxable accounts assets.  I split my whole amount into proper asset allocation amounts congruent with my investing situation.  The answer to your question is really easier than you think, and you don't need any input from forum members.

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

+1

Awww, don't mess with the newb looking for advice.

Not messing. Maybe not all $400k if that is their whole net worth, but $40k is a reasonable amount.

Just asking for recommendations (ie. things to consider, things to avoid).  Please forgive the obvious question, since *everyone* in the world has already been in this exact situation and solved it on their own.

I can reasonably assure you that I didn't just beam in here from another planet and spawn this thread without first reading much of MMM's blog and picking through the forum.

Really, I'd just appreciate how to approach this.  I've ruled out dollar-cost-averaging my way back into the market.  I've also concluded that index funds make sense and individual stocks are for sukkas.  I'd also like to wager some with Lending Club.

However, I'm unsure whether to dump the bulk into a Vanguard IRA and motor on, or additionally pay them to manage it (which seems to only amount to rebalancing whenever 5% out of balance, which I could do on my own).   Or should I give it to Fidelity, Personal Capital, etc.  Or maybe give each $100K?

Again, any directional help would be much appreciated.  Thx!

P.S.  I also understand that the *real* work comes from what I do after this, but I need to get this cash invested pronto.

I second this suggestion:

Once you read that, it should answer your questions, and/or give you more specific ones to ask. :)
