$10,000 Credit card points question
« on: March 17, 2015, 10:35:50 AM »
Hello!!!

I have an expense that's coming up and it is for the amount of $10,592.12.  I have the cash to pay it, how ever I want to use credit cards to pay for it since its major points!! I was thinking about applying for 2 Chase Sapphire Preffered credit cards ( one for hubby, and one for myself) and splitting the amount in 2 and charging it (according to my calculations this should give us about $450.00 each, so about $900.00,  I would be adding an authorized user to get the extra bonus of 5,000 points) The expense I have can be charged in multiple credit cards, any amounts and it will be made by the end of April/early May 2015.  So I have a little time to read up.  Is there a better credit card I should be looking at?  I mean you guys are the pros here so I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!!!

both good cards.  you should do a third to maximize.  since you're going with UR already you could do the chase INK business card.  also UR rewards are much much more valuable used for travel than cash but if you dont travel then go ahead and take the cash back.  INK is 60k points after 5k spend i believe.  pretty easy to get even if you dont own a business.

a few considerations before you go this route.  what is the expense?

I ask because I just had my house/deck etc. painted on a rental.  The quote was $7700.  He was charging an extra 3% (sometimes it's already baked in to the price) if I wanted to charge it to my CC.  conversely, he also offered me a lower "cash only" discount that exceeded the savings I would have received from the CC offers.  if you're going to use the CC though, Chase Sapphire is a good choice for scoring the 90K ultimate rewards points.

No difference whether I pay check, cash or credit card.  Additionally they offer financing (that sucks).

It all depends on where you want to travel/what kind of rewards you want.

If you can find the 50,000 mile sign up offers for Chase Southwest Plus and Chase Southwest Premier, the $10,000 is enough to earn a companion pass on Southwest (a companion flies free with you for the rest of 2015 and all of 2016, and you would have 110,000 miles to book your flights with)...I got this, priced out the rewards to about $4,000. Not sure if it's easy to find the offers now.

Here is a post the details it.
