YouTube videos of people unwrapping crappy toys
« on: September 10, 2015, 09:47:25 PM »
Two different moms mentioned this to me this week.  It's an actual thing.  Watching adults unwrap little plastic toys.  There are entire YouTube channels devoted to this, and to watching people play with said toys.

For example:
http://youtu.be/b_2gzrzWGj8

I feel like the end is nigh, and what's worse is my 2 year old is HOOKED.

Did you also know that the people who posts said videos are making $$ off the ads?

And my 2 y/o is also hooked.

Our 2 year old also loves them. But what's better, watching someone else unwrap crap, or having it in your own home?

I love unboxing vids for the same reason - I can get most of the "aah, new!" experience without having to buy the item.

I was hoping this was going to be about this: early Christmas presents

Why are your 2 year olds watching YouTube videos? :p

But, yes, it's entirely a thing.  As is watching other people play through video games and comment on them.

You can find lots of videos about making and eating food.

Elsewhere on the internet, you can find videos of people having sex.

I mean, why experience anything yourself?  You can literally watch everything you'd ever want to do on the internet!

... no, I don't get it either.

I'm sorry, but I could only make it about half way through.  That was just really...annoying.
Apparently this person gets people to send her some of that stuff, so at least she has that....

My 3y/o is obsessed, and when she gets a new toy and opens it, she does the same, narrating which accessories the toy comes with, etc.

Embarrassingly, one of the most elusive and popular unboxing stars is a former adult/internet film star, that, uh, I used to like as well.  And now my daughter watches her unwrap toys (you can only see her hands).  Strange, strange stuff man.

My 9 year old is hooked on Bratayley. Its this suburban family somewhere that spends their time at gymnastics, various drive throughs in their SUV, then at baseball, and then messing around at their house.

When I've watched with my 9 year old I note the frequent brands mentioned, the toys unwrapped and played with, etc. I've used it as an opportunity to point out the many ways the family is probably making money off of their video channel. I don't want my 9 year old to just fall into the consumerist trap.

We did have a period where he was measuring his (our) life against their life. No we don't go to those kinds of places and no, we don't have a lakefront house and a new SUV and all their stuff.

Thankfully the comparisons have stopped. He was pretty frustrated for a month or so and I encouraged him to quit the channel. My wife noticed his behavior as well - and we worked on him about it. I think he understands it now better.

There is real life and there is TV... ;)

These are teaching toddlers how to become good, little materialistic consumers.  :(

It goes straight to the earliest/freshest/virgin part of their personalities and will likely be ingrained into their id for life.  The thing you bought doesn't matter--getting it and opening is what does.  I find the whole thing terrifying.  Maybe babies would naturally like murder/torture/screaming videos as well?  ...Probably best not to queue up a bunch of those.

On the other side of the coin, the people doing this are making major money...

The game play-throughs, I get.  I use them If I get stuck and can't figure it out on my own.this guy is hilarious. I'd rather watch him than most TV  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB_4BnQe-qc

The product unboxings aimed at adults are sometimes helpful. Fancy food box club? Wow, that's a waste  of money. I could put something like that together from Cost Plus. "Does this thing really work?" Bizzarely entertaining.

I let my toddler watch these unwrap videos, then we know what NOT to buy.

The unboxing videos are also a lesson in consumerism.

Like this one, among thousands of other videos. But this one wins it all.

Good grief.  No wonder there are groups in third world countries who want to kill us all.  :(

That's several layers of branded wrapping containing the purses? Its a different part of the universe from the one I live in. ;)

This weekend I cleaned out my gutters and installed leaf filters. Maybe I should post a video??? ;)
