So this ticket won the 1.2M and change in a Chase the Ace draw which have gained a lot of popularity in this neck of the woods lately (if you are not familiar, it's like a 50/50, but the winning ticket gets to pick a card from a deck, and if that card it the Ace, then the winner gets the jackpot Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chase_the_Ace

The winners were this woman and her nephew.  Each got a check for a cool $611K and change.  Everyone's happy right?  Wrong!  It turns out that the woman claims she only promised to split the consolation prize, and not the jackpot with her nephew.  It doesn't seem the woman has much to stand on, the winning ticket had her AND her nephew's name on it, which she admits adding to the ticket, and the newphew's phone number was also on the ticket as the contact number.

If I actually ended up winning some large sum of money, I wouldn't bother going after someone unless I had something really ironclad (probably one of the reason's why I don't participate in lotto pools).

Unfortunately she is looking at this as losing 600K instead of winning 600K.

Sounds like another "lotto winner" who will be back living paycheck to paycheck in less than 5 years...

Your link doesn't seem to be working. I read about this on the Yahoo! homepage and the report was that the woman, immediately, upon winning with her nephew announced to him and the crowd that she was going to sue him.

Based on that behaviour, I think what she has to lose is family and community relationships more so than money.

If what she says is true and she clearly expressed all this to her nephew in advance (i.e. I am not planning to share jackpot with you but am nonetheless putting your name on the ticket for good luck), just IF it is accurate... why wouldn't she discuss this privately with her nephew? If that was their deal, why assume immediately that a lawsuit is the right approach? It just seems completely over the top! I can't see any good coming of this.

$600k won't last more than 2 years max.

You never know, there's always the luck factor - maybe she walks into a casino in Vegas and puts half her stash on black and wins, delaying the inevitable...but either way, in the medium run it's going to zero.

Poor young man, his family is going to rip him apart and throw away the pieces.

I'd be tempted to just hand the whole thing to such an odious relative and tell them it's a goodbye present, but if he does that, he doubtlessly will have other relatives shrieking at him for not giving it to them instead.

I'd be more inclined to think it'll be the other way around. Whatever the outcome of the lawsuit, Spendypants McGee will blow through whatever she gets and then find that, shockingly, the family doesn't express any interest in helping her after the way she treated the nephew. She'll be on her own at that point, and probably a pariah in the community given the public commotion she made.

I bet she spends a significant portion of her winnings on the lawyer. She'll probably run out of money before her nephew.

Guess the nephew knows who not to send a Christmas card to.

In a normal family, yes. However an environment that produces an individual who behaves like that is seldom normal, and there are usually other people with their hands out. Suppose he does not return the $600k: he's going to be surrounded by other family members trying just as hard to claw it out of him.

In my opinion, I think she is lucky that putting multiple names on the ticket didn't simply invalidate the entry.

Might be worthwhile (and kind of sad) to just up and relocate and go no contact for a while if that happens.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
