Not sure if this is relevant, but in Australia we have the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC), modelled on the BBC. We also have the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), also government funded, which caters for our large migrant community, and broadcast news from many nations, in their own languages. In the evenings SBS seems more like the ABC or BBC. Both our state broadcasters buy programs from the BBC, and other European broadcasters, many of which are also state enterprises. Sometimes two European broadcasters will make a joint production. The BBC seems to have an almost bottomless pit of money and talent to make programs, but recovers some of the costs through worldwide sales.
I realise that not all Americans who subscribe to cable would watch the ABC or SBS if they lived in Australia.
Right wing Australian politicians accuse the Australian Broadcasting Commission of left wing bias, and less frequently, left wing politicians accuse the ABC of right wing bias, so the ABC must be getting it right.
I sometimes send an email of appreciation to both the ABC and SBS if they show an excellent program.
Both ABC and SBS offer apps for an Ipad, so if I miss a program I can see it later.
I see that some BBC programs are available on YouTube.
