I just found it quite entertaining, how people think because you save you aren't taking vacations or eating berries for meals, LOL.

I'm also "sleepyguy" on those forums and as you see I try my best to be pretty straight forward.  I didn't create the topic but it turn ed out to be pretty funny, with a user 'bragging' about spending $70k on just himself on nothing.  Also how his whiskey cabinet is worth more than others retirement accounts... pretty much sounds idiotic imho.

Thought some Canadians on here could use a chuckle.

It's because he's literally pissing away his money.

The sad part is that the general population behaves like him, the only difference is that he knows how much he spends on all that crap and blames everyone else for his problems, usually people don't have a clue on how much they spend and complain that it's the government's fault.

And when sleepyguy commented on that level of spending, someone else said "I don't see a single problem with his spending."  Really?  Not a single problem?  Wow.

We don't even talk to our friends about money anymore.  To them, "good with money" means you pay your bills on time and can afford to have nice things.  It doesn't involve saving.

And the hilarity doesn't stop,

Almost like bragging about speeding tickets... He is in awe of someone spending an outrageous amount on food and booze.  Umm-ok...

I enjoy going to gambling resorts for vacations because I like to exploit their player reward systems without actually playing, so I also contribute on some discussion boards on the topic.  There are people on there who brag about reaching Seven Stars status with Caesars Entertainment, which means they earned at least 125,000 tier credits.  Players earn 1 tier credit per $5 put through a slot machine or per $10 put through a video poker machine (and much more per tier credit for table games.)  That means, at a minimum, these people put $625,000 through a slot machine in a year to earn this status.  Even if they were really lucky and this translated to only $200,000 in real money, that's a staggering amount of money to waste for bragging rights.  It simply blows my mind.

Meanwhile, I got the Caesars credit card to get Platinum status for free (which is a 7500 tier credit value) and here I am spending absolutely nothing on gambling to still have all the fun of their resorts.

I will never understand people who brag about wasting huge amounts of money.

Although presumably less than if you had invested in them

LOL - Right on, MoneyCat. Are you by chance on the LVA forum? I notice all the Diamond Level/Seven Stars players almost never lament their steep losses. Every single one of them seems to be a big winner. Not buying it at all. I think people conveniently forget the losses and just post on their wins. In the end, we know who wins...

P.S. DH and I also did the TR credit card to gain Platinum status. A few years ago it was worth it (free 24 buffets, no resort fees, etc) but nowadays it gives us no more benefit that Gold.

Not just the Seven Stars players, I was in Vegas for my FIL's 85th birthday party, and a cousin of his went to a casino with us when we went to look around the place and have lunch.  She came out very happy that she had a slip for her $95 or so in winnings at the slots.  I asked her how much she put in to get that, and she looked at me like I was from Mars.  She had no idea how much money she might have had to put in to make that, and obviously didn't see it as relevant.

Its not only people who gamble who think that way about expenses vs. revenue, though.  A contractor friend of my wife, who is actually pretty frugal, does his taxes by guessing how much he spent on materials for the projects he did over the year and subtracting it from his deposits to figure out what he made for the year.  No receipts are kept.  I hope he never gets audited, though the chance is pretty low in his income bracket, which is Medicaid level.

Only the wins are salient to them.  Considering this is pretty much the opposite of the way human brains usually work, casinos have really figured something out there.

The only real benefit to Platinum level for me right now is that I don't have to pay parking fees when I go to Atlantic City for getaways now, so that saves me $10 a trip.  Of course, the casinos will give you free parking for earning 25 tier credits, but my goal is not to gamble so that doesn't help me.  The only reason they charge for parking at all is to keep people from doing what I'm doing and basically parking at the casino so they can go on the beach all day.  There is no charge for beach access in Atlantic City, unlike most of the Jersey Shore.

By the way, if you ever want to get Diamond status without gambling -- so you can use the Diamond lounge, skip hotel lines and buffet lines, etc -- you can get a Founders Card membership for $295/year and that will get you free Diamond status with Caesars Entertainment.  I've thought about doing that, but it seems like overkill for me when I'm already getting so much for free anyway.
