Just proves there's a sucker made every minute. How is it "Made Solid"? Was it porous initially and then filled with resin?

A buddy has a business wholesaling semi-precious stones. He loves consumer sucka 'inventions' and fads like these. But he's a savvy frugal chap.

Well, it's a rock, so...

Basically it started out as a bunch of loose material which was then pressurized and heated until it became solid.

"Choose this over food!" one commenter joked.
"I had to send it back because there weren't any doggone instructions. I don't even know how to turn the flippin thing on," another wrote."

Love these comments!

Yeah I know but man-made or earth-magick?

All that global warming earth-magick is hooey. It was probably planted to confuse us, just like dinosaur bones.

Replace the goblins in the mines of Moria with an industrial scale dino bone fabrication and subsurface installing operation.

No way am I going to buy a rock sack from Nordstrom.  I prefer artisan rock sacks.  That's why I chose to buy on Etsy from my new etsy store, Rocka Wear.

From the article:

Quote
"A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It's up to you," reads the description at the Nordstrom online store.

This sounds like something that someone came up with to win a bet. Trying to come up with the most outrageously stupid thing for people to buy.

Also, who the hell is buying this? Hipsters with $85 of disposable funds, buying it for the ironic lulz? Or are people actually looking at that and thinking "that's classy, I'll take 2!"

I think I'll just go outside and scoop up some gravel from the driveway and sew it into a little velvet bag as gifts...

Then I can tell everyone I'm an artist and my gifts are hand made...

Nordstrom got an advertising gimmick that paid for itself!

Open carry means something different for you than it does for me.

You know it's only a matter of time before they start being sold on ebay for double the list price... D:

Nope. Same meaning. Different part of the country + humor.

Anyone else see the cellphone charging bed? Seems like a fire waiting to happen...

Seriously! Who buys this stuff?

I'll never get rich b/c I automatically discount stuff like this as too stupid to sell.

Apparently I need to start bottling my used motor oil and selling it in small quantities as an artsy thing that functions as a statement on the 21st century. You put it on your bookshelf to spark esoteric discussions about pollution and the future of fossil fuels... I'll name them Oiliver or something...

Market it as Essential Oil of Dinosaur.

As crazy as it is... is it really that crazy?

When I read, "Well, it's a rock, so...  Basically it started out as a bunch of loose material which was then pressurized and heated until it became solid," all I could think of was diamonds. It is pressurized/heated carbon, and it is pretty. People spend how much on pretty rocks every year?

@CNN money: Auto-play videos/ads on the webpage. This is a thing again? I thought this died with mySpace. Auto-play videos should only exist on video sites, like youtube! Please stop doing this. No one watches the ad, but everyone is irritated by it.

I'm carrying openly right now, as I do daily, and I thought your post was funny, EricL. The rock, though, for $85, I can't decide if this is funny or just so freakin' sad.  People just cannot throw away their money fast enough.

I just thought of a use for this thing...  I'm giving the human race the benefit of the doubt...(which I will likely regret...)

What if it's being bought as an 'interesting/funny gift card?'  People are buying it with the full intention that they tell the other person to exchange it, but at least it will generate some laughs when they open it.

I'm probably wrong, but I'm trying really hard to believe people aren't as stupid as they seem.

For only slightly more (95 USD) you can custom order a rock from my etsy store with a hand sewn pouch! Show your Nordstrom friends how much more artsy and eclectic you are then them!

In all seriousness it's almost worth 20 cents to post this on etsy

*Slaps forehead* Why didn't I think of this?
I live next to the Colorado River and there is an abundance of lovely river rounded rocks available. I have a degree in geology so I can even describe the rocks. I might have to throw a few on ebay just to see what they do.

Destroying the natural environment for profit... so not cool. :)

Around here they raid the creek bottoms for rock for houses and other projects.
