Cool your patio for only $600
« on: September 12, 2016, 09:43:32 AM »
Hey guys.  Longtime lurker.  I really enjoy the forum.  Planning to post a proper introduction at some point in the intro thread.  In the meantime, was at Home Depot yesterday grabbing some hardware to rework one of our closets for an Airbnb experiment next month.

Came across this gem.  Only $599 to cool your outdoor living space....

The Gulf Coast chuckles heartily at any attempts at climate control based on evaporative cooling. . . .

FL Gulf Coast representin'! The only way to cool your outdoor living space is to vacate said living space.
That product is clearly not meant for use on the entire Gulf Coast, TX to FL.

This thread reminds me of the laughs I had reading this MMM post:

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/08/20/three-fuel-saving-hacks-for-long-roadtrips/

You know what would happen if I tried "Honey-Style-Badger Air Conditioning" in Houston? I'd still be just as hot and miserable and simply more damp. I also remember the first time I experienced the West Coast during the summer. Seeing my sweat evaporate was like experiencing the most wonderful sorcery in action. :)

Evaporative cooling does work in a truly dry climate.  Putting a wet T-shirt over a sixpack can keep your beer cool on a camping trip.

Or, you can apply this approach to a house. Check out this approach from days past:  http://www.utopiasprings.com/submarineshack.htm

Dunno why you would have it on a patio but I had something similar (smaller and cheaper) for my bedroom. When you live in an apartment with no cooling and casement windows in a dry climate it actually works quite well.

Why not get a $2 squirt bottle of tap water and squirt it at yourself?

I worked in Fl at a business that used an aquirium filled with ice water to cool our research equipment. The aquarium always dripped condensation off the outside walls.
We made a sales trip to Pasedena Ca, during the demo, there was never a single drop
of condensation on the aquarium. I was very impressed with the aquarium and the comfort of the area. I'm  still in Fl. and still dripping.

Huh,

for an outdoor patio, also at Home Depot, this works on a similar principal, for $22....  maybe add in a floor fan for another $24?

To be fair they do include this:
Half the country need not apply..
