This whole website just makes me so sad. I love its sister sites, The Hairpin and The Awl, but too much of this website just seems to be chronicling horrible habits and excuses. At least some of it seems like people/commenters are following conventional wisdom, but even that doesn't appear to be the majority.

So many things wrong with that post, I don't know where to start.
Her list of things that seem more likely than growing old without having money is ridiculous. How many times have people gotten old? versus How many times has an asteroid collided with Earth? Sheesh.
Antimustachian Wall of Shame and Comedy indeed.
Also, reading the comments, I get the feeling that this is a "character" overblown for the site to get people riled up and visiting, and they have another "character" who advocates smart money decisions. It's basically trying to get eyeballs, but through teaching bad things, likely so they can sell out ala TSD and GRS. Good way to make money nowdays, financial blogs. Plan to never visit that site again, until they're linked here for the next set of ridiculousness.

Amen. I posted it because it's a new site and I was curious about it. I receive updates from the sister sites in my google reader, so I don't notice too many of the ads that are throughout the conglomeration (though it is a monetized site already). The split personality thing is understandable enough as a device, but based on the comments, it seems like the "demon" in that arrangement is way too close to some people's reality. Then it just serves as reinforcement. What further saddens me is that I get the impression that a lot of the readers of these sites are reasonably young and their habits are still being set. Seeing that behavior as anything other than an aberration could justify it in their minds. As plenty of later converts to the more frugal way of life have said, those behaviors set in your 20s can take a long time to get out of/recover from financially.
Oh well. That's why I'll keep the Hairpin and the Awl for what they are and ignore the Billfold in favor of MMM :)
