The Ads on this forum are good for a giggle
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:13:38 PM »
I appreciate that MMM is making money on this forum, I especially appreciate what he is doing with it. Thus, I have absolutely no problem with the rarely obvious ads stuck at the bottom of the page. In fact, they often brighten my day. There is a wonderful bit of irony in what most of these ads are selling, and the life style MMM preaches.

Case and point, the ad that made me post this: The bowflex treadclimber - the cardio walker! I'm going to assume I don't need to explain why] the idea of a cardio walking machine being advertised here has me snickering.

So, if you want moment of enjoying someone else's misfortune, take a look at the ad at the bottom of this page and think "Somone paid for that to be shown here."

Well most of those are pay-per-click, and they aren't likely to get a lot of clicks from here. But yeah, it is funny.

Ha yeah. Although I make a significant portion of my monthly income from google ads, so it seems like it would be wrong to block them :P

My internet connection is a tin can and a string.  It makes a significant difference.

...also, the way ads are distributed now, there is a significant security enhancement by blocking them.  More than a few normal above-board sites have managed to serve up malware served by their advertisers.  No ads for me, and minimal or no scripts.

See, that's because you are missing out on all those "click here to double your internet speed" ads.

I'm gonna finish off my school debt in April, (been paying an aggressive $1500/month toward it, 200 is the minimum).

After it's paid off, I was debating what to do with the residual $1500/month (since I'm already putting 17.5k into my 401k and 5.5k into a Roth IRA)

THE ADS TOLD ME!

...

Lease a new Maserati Gran Turismo Sport, $1399/month!

Hahahaha.

I found the treadclimber on Amazon and left a review:

How to save three grand:
1. Find some stairs (perhaps you have some in your house!)
2. Walk up and down them until you're tired
3. Maybe walk some other places too

I assumed they were customized according to the reader.  How else would they know I am dying to spend $800 on a FAKE diamond ring?

If the ads are served up by adsense or similar, they are reading your cookies to see where you have been, what sort of sites you have looked at, and what of needs you may have.

You may laugh at what they are showing you, but something in your browsing history likely made them serve that ad to you. I spend decent time on a number of personal finance sites, so I am constantly bombarded by credit card ads.

Best,
Mr. PoP
