Superyachts!
« on: October 12, 2016, 12:03:58 AM »
I find it curious and perplexing how amazingly status conscious these extraordinarily wealth people are.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/oct/09/superyachts-and-bragging-rights-why-the-super-rich-love-their-floating-homes

Not all super rich people need everyone to know. But those that do. Wow.  Overcompensating for something.

Favorite quote about yachts has to be about their price, "if you need to ask, you can't afford it."

I saw A in Alaska of all places. Rounded a bend and there she was in the middle of a bay at anchor. Impressive, but otherworldly; a fantasy for me is a $500k 36-42' yacht, I can't even conceive of something on this level.

The part I find the saddest about this is the competition of it. Where if you buy a 45m yacht you might feel inferior to someone with a 50m one.

I'm far more impressed by the attractive young women surfing in front of the 'superyacht' in the article picture.

If you feel like that's the only thing standing between you and these young women and you have the means, then knock yourself out. It is my assumption that there are wiser methods one can employee to attract the attention of women.

Yeah ... and then there's Larry Ellison and his giga-yacht habit:  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/travelnews/article-3098790/The-world-s-largest-gigayacht-size-two-football-fields-nine-decks-two-helipads-costs-cool-770MILLION.html

I recall reading quite some time ago how he mandated a change order to extend the length of a giga-yacht that was being built for him because he'd heard that someone else had commissioned a larger yacht.

The academic's "conclusion" (showing off wealth was more important than travel) was foregone - these massive boats require full-time crew and have yearly maintenance costs of 10-15%; it's normal to spend $20MM-$40MM just to keep the boat in good running order. Much of the time these boats are devoid of any guests - particularly when they are making long bluewater crossings (the owners fly and meet their boat in whatever port they want to go to).

Given that even the super-rich don't travel non-stop, they could spend $1MM/week traveling and spend less than the cost to operate a super-yacht.

Saw the Octopus a few years back in California.  It made the USCG's offshore rescue boat parked nearby look like a skiff.

A guy I went to college with mentioned going to nightclubs in London with his gf. His gf apparently knows a ton of celebrities and so they were in the VIP section. That night there were a group of rich guys from the Middle East that were ordering bottle service. They were paying a ton of money for a bottle of champagne. When they would do so, the music would change to their preference for a minute while the staff brought it out and opened it for them. The thing is, none of the men in those table could drink alcohol, so they were just spending their money to get attention. As soon as one table ordered a bottle, another would do so as well.

Even a superyacht purchase is no biggie at this level of wealth.

I'm not sure if its fair for me to be 'sickened' by it as I realize there are many people on this planet who would be sickened by my own purchases.

Everything is relative.

I think I'll stick with, if they can afford it....

Since I am a 62 year old married woman not trolling for girls, I meant it in as general advice.

Big giant yacht, one way to ensure an endless parades of comely females through your life. Pounding the stage in a rock band, another way. Playing on
NFL fields on Sunday, anotjer way.

Sure, agreed that there are less expensive ways, and therefore monetarily wiser, to get (probably) higher quality women. But yachts are still, good f one lacks imaginatin or wisdom.

I'm more interested in explorer yachts like the yersin that can go almost anywhere : http://www.superyachtfan.com/yacht-yersin.html

A meager 250 feet and 80 million!

Then for the exceptionally impoverished there is the fpb (fast practical boat). I think they go for a cheap 2-5 million.

I've crewed on smaller boats before (the largest being a 68' schooner).  One of my crewmates spent half the year working on a converted tug-boat.
Sounded a bit weird but it was super-amazing.  Very stable boats and so beamy (wide) that the staterooms were bigger than my bedroom.

They are slower but they look like they can go anywhere.

Crewing on a schooner must have been awesome. I've taken sailing lessons but never went further because we only have a small river near by and it's essentially a sewer during major rainfall.

I'm a bit perplexed about this whole superyacht thing actually. Any rich person should of course be allowed to spend money how they see fit (excluding buying politicians and evading taxes though).

But the question the keeps popping into my head is why? Why would you enter a competition to have the "biggest" boat. And why do they even have boats if the don't sail them?

I wonder if they wake up onboard their superyacht and feel fulfilled and happy or if they are just scared that a bigger boat may have shown up over night.

To paraphrase the good old Dr. Freud: sometimes a superyacht is just a superyacht. The rest of the time it's a cock reference.

It's the same with a ship as it is with a sportscar. Those who agree that it's one big dick measuring contest take it very seriously. Everyone else smiles, nods, and understands that they're compensating.

It was.  I served as the cook, so while I still helped everywhere (with a crew of eight everyone does a little of everything) my knowledge of sails is still pretty basic.  Usually I was just called upon to be a grinder... here, lift this sheet... when I have a bit more time I want to go back and learn how to really handle solo-sail.

Tugs are slow and I think that's why they get rejected out of hand so often.  But when the boat is the place you want to be, speed isn't so important. They are stable, wide and can handle more bad weather than anything in their size class.  I'd never buy one regardless of my financials, but personally I'd favor a hundred foot converted ocean tug over these 300++ ft mega yachts that have crews of 40 and are too big for most harbors.

An anchor handling tug would make an awesome superyacht.
A bit like having a bulldozer to do the school run.

http://www.workboatsinternational.com unfortunatley they don't list prices anymore, but old cruise ships used to be <  $1M

That would probably be a tanker.  I'm still waiting for the day when some bloke converts a super tanker into a prvate yacht, just to say they have "the longest one."
The ULCC tankers are all over 1,000 feet (300+ meter) ... double the length of even the biggest super yachts.  Of course 95% is just the deck over massive crude tanks, but I'm sure some crazy billionaire could repurpose it into something idiotic, like a garden complete with full grown trees and monkeys.  Or something.  A small lake with a mini yacht in it.

the mini-yacht-inside-a-lake-on-a-boat just reminded me of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwdZGFmngc8

Oracle's co-founder Larry Ellison loves sailboat racing, and the new Oracle Campus (in San Mateo, California) has a small pond in it.  He helicoptered in his multi-million$ race yacht into the pond where it now resides as a trophy to winning the America's cup.
To see it inperson is ridiculous; a tiny pond and a HUGE sailboat.  Even if the pond was deep enough (it's not) there's not enough room for the boat to turn around.

There is a house in my town that has a small pond in front of it with a pontoon boat on it that barely fits. I giggle every time I drive by and see the family boating. I guess this is the mega-rich version of that.

These displays of wealth disgust and sicken me. And I'm not even that frugal.

You should find a way to get in on the game. ;)

Ars Technica had an article a while ago about an IT guy who specializes in servicing the network on these things: http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/04/super-yacht-it-life-as-a-nautical-broadband-specialist/

Tugs are slow and I think that's why they get rejected out of hand so often.  But when the boat is the place you want to be, speed isn't so important. A friend-of-a-friend lived on a sailboat for a while, got tired of it (mostly, he never bothered to actually sail it), and is in the process of building a tugboat into a liveabord boat.

Most of the America's cup boats from the no-limits era never sail again. They are designed for the precise wind conditions at the course and are pretty much unuseable anywhere else. Some of the profiled rigid sails have to be almost assembled in place and are almost impossible to re-rig.
